WASHINGTON -- U.S. News & World Report says America's best high school is in Virginia, one of three to make it in the magazine's top 100.
The magazine's first-ever high school rankings give the top honor to Fairfax County's elite Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.
Using K-12 data research and analysis business run by Standard & Poor's, the magazine put high schools in 40 states through a three-step analysis. U.S. News and World measured how each school's students performed on state tests, adjusting for student circumstances. Then it evaluated how well each school's disadvantaged students did. Lastly, they looked at whether the school was successful in providing college-level coursework.
The magazine's analysis considered more than 18,500 high schools in 40 states.

there are actually 6 in the top 100 from the suburban DC area— both MD and VA.
also, they only looked at public high schools.
My self esteem is shattered, I sue.
I'm still amazed to this day how I got into this high school.
I know I messed up on the entrance exam.
I don’t know why the editor or author made an issue out of three from Virginia being in the top 100. I counted 18 being in New York.
TJ at the top - no surprise. That is a drop-dead excellent school. My younger daughter came within a hair of going there but we just couldn’t justify the 2 hour trip each way. It was a tough call. I have a friend whose son is doing the trip. Graduate from TJ and you can pretty much pick your college.
Probably because number 1 is in Virginia.
Good point and it also states that US News and World Report evaluated high schools in only 40 states.
a number of states did not participate, they didn’t give their scores to the magazine. I think this may have slightly more valdity than those “best places to live” lists.
My HS was ranked #143. It’s in MD.
Odd to me that test-to-get-in magnet high schools would be grouped with other high schools in this survey as they would have a natural advantage. But I didn’t read the survey methodology, so maybe I should...
The 6 schools are all in the immediate DC suburbs. i live in Northern VA and my kids attend private schools. i think it is a testament to the strength of the education in this area that the private schools are all extremely competitive, given the excellence of the public education here. are the 18 NY schools all in the NYC area?
the second step determined whether the school's least-advantaged students (black, Hispanic, and low-income) were performing better than average for similar students in the state. We compared each school's math and reading proficiency rates for disadvantaged students with the statewide results for these disadvantaged student groups and then selected schools that were performing better than this state average. So if you locale doesn't have any "disadvantaged" students your local school is disqualified from being "judged nationally." How absurd!Schools that made it through those first two steps became eligible to be judged nationally on the final step: college-readiness ...
ML/NJ
No such school exists. However, there is an International Baccalaureate School in Bartow, FL which ranks as third.
The list needs a html break between "California" and "International" to properly represent the school in Bartow.
My daughter is a senior there.
It appears several of the listing are not correct, and I've checked several of the sources of this list and they are all incorrect. You would think somebody would have spotted this earlier.
Sixteen are. The other two are in Western New York State.
Is there more to that, or did you just get an inspiration to plug Virginia?
Boston Latin (exam school)
Wellesley and Weston (extremely wealthy areas outside Boston)
