Cambridge Officials Put a Stop to Boy Scout Drive to Aid Troops in Iraq

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The city that's home to Harvard and MIT solidified its nickname as "The People's Republic of Cambridge" when it put a stop to a Boy Scout troop's Election Day drive to collect care packages for American soldiers in Iraq, claiming it was "political."

“We just wanted to make a lot of troops happy,” Scout Patrick O’Connor told the Boston Herald.

The big-hearted Scouts from Cambridge Troop 45 had placed donation boxes at the city's 33 polling stations in hopes of collecting toiletries, magazines, candy and other items after one of O'Connor's relatives was injured in an IED explosion while serving in Iraq.

But someone complained to the city, allegedly claiming the boxes were a “political statement,” and the boxes were removed.

-snip-

Cambridge Vice Mayor Timothy J. Toomey Jr. told the Herald that a breakdown in communication, rather than malice, led to the boxes being removed.

“Boy Scouts Troop 45’s efforts to support our troops are a benefit for the entire community, and the council will be working with them to ensure that their goals are fully realized,” he said in a written statement.

Is this any surprise from the state that continues to elect and support the likes of Kennedy and Kerry? Pathetic!

But someone complained to the city, allegedly claiming the boxes were a “political statement,” ....

How the heck does "THIS END UP" become a political statement?

“Someone complained” is getting tired anymore. Tell “someone” to stuff it and continue the collection.

A local radio station(WBZ) has taken up for the Boy Scouts. You can drop donations in the lobby of the station.
Even the liberal late night/morning host was outraged.

someone complained to the city

Who complained? A person cannot complain to a city, a person has to complain to a person. Who complained and who did they complain to?

The only surprise is that Cambridge beat Berkeley or San Francisco to the punch!

I’ll take your “Splash” Kennedy and “Live-Shot” Kerry and raise you a Klintoon-in-law Boxer and the Coal-Miner’s Wife, Feinstein.

Since the collecting group was the Boy Scouts, I have to conclude that the complainer was a member of a group that until recently dared not speak its name.

But someone complained to the city, allegedly claiming the boxes were a “political statement,” and the boxes were removed.

The problem isn't that someone complained; there will always be complainers. The problem is that the Cambridge city leaders capitulated to their complaints rather than telling them, "Thanks for your input" and then ignoring them.

“Who complained?”

I’d say either Barney Frank or John Kerry

I’d say either Barney Frank or John Kerry

I'd venture to guess some grey haired old activist who has lived in one of the rent-controlled apartments in Cambridge for years.

fine...ask the local churches if they will allow the boxes and maybe even include the note in the announcments.

Then after all the proceeds are collected, put out a press conference thanking all the Christians in the community for their support of the BSA and the US Soldiers, DESPITE the attempt by radical malcontent elements to cut off troop funds!
