Outspoken ASU Professor Draws Ire
TOPICS: Culture/Society; News/Current Events; US: Arizona
KEYWORDS: asu; globalwarming; robertballing
Article is about how dissident Arizona State University climatologist and professor Dr. Robert Balling is "hated by environmentalists" because of his dissenting views on global warming. As a global warming skeptic he is routinely derided by environmentalists and scorned by other so-called global warming experts because he does not agree with the "consensus" view of global warming being a threat to the world. His research results are questioned because he sometimes receives money from industry along with EPA and the National Science Foundation. Notwithstanding the scorn he receives from some colleagues, his lifestyle is definitely "green" as he avoids driving (rides a bicycle) and doesn't own a cellphone.

“Balling’s research over the years has explored sun activity, pollution from volcanoes, the urban-heat-island effect and errors in past temperature models as possible causes of rising temperatures.”
About time someone talk urban-heat-island effect. The leftist global warming religion cherry picks their data. Its called lying.

""For ASU, having Balling as such a prominent figure in the climate debate has been awkward, not so much because of his positions but because we have lacked scientists of similar stature whose work supports more widely held, opposing views," Jonathan Fink, director of ASU's Global Institute of Sustainabili"Well, DUH.
Widely held views with few scientists of similar stature? Evidently not that wide among real scientists with stature on the subject..

Yes, even in winter the city of Cicinnati is often 10 degrees warmer than my rural location;you don’t suppose 100,000 furnaces clustered have an effect?

Evidently not that wide among real scientists with stature on the subject..I imagine that if Balling held the "consensus" view, they would not characterize his position on the faculty as "awkward" and would not say that they needed a "global warming denier" for balance. Hypocrites.

urban-heat-island effect He's in the perfect place to study this. The Phoenix of today hardly resembles the Phoenix I grew up in. During the summer, it's still nearly 100*F at midnight.
Much of that phenomenon can be attributed to the increase in concrete and asphalt, which releases heat very slowly after the sun goes down.

I moved into Phoenix in 1979’ish, don’t remember exact date. Anyways, not only is it hotter over the last 28 years, but there is more humidity from all the pools and swamp coolers. But its a dry heat.

I left to join the Army in ‘76. I can remember driving to work in August with the windows down...the flow-through air was all that was needed to keep you relatively cool.
Nowadays - fuggedaboutit!

Tell us about it. I can be here, though. I was born here in ‘73. My dad came down in ‘67. A week before Thanksgiving and it’s been in the 90s around here. Nasty! Last night I was at ASU for a mock trial. Was talking about how we used to have real thunderstorms here.
