Spitzer to abandon plan giving driver's licenses for illegal immigrants (Good!)
AP via syracuse.com ^ | November 13, 2007

Congressional aides say New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has decided to abandon his plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Officials familiar with the decision tell The Associated Press that Spitzer will meet Wednesday morning with New York's congressional delegation. Many of them have openly opposed the program and debate over the issue has spilled over into the presidential campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement has been made, say that after the meeting, Spitzer will say he is shelving the plan and that immigration is a federal issue to be handled by Washington.

He’s not a popular guy with fellow Dhimmicrats, particularly in the NY legislature. He certainly doesn’t keep people waiting around to find out what is his position on things, though. :’)

Aren’t Spitzer and her Thighness from the same state? You would think the RATS would have their shiite together on at least ONE issue - no?

Sorry people. This is how ABC is spinning this:

“Clinton has been criticized by her Democratic and Republican rivals for her noncommittal answers on the subject. She has said she sympathizes with governors like Spitzer who are forced to confront the issue of immigration because the federal government has not enacted immigration reform. She has not taken a position on the actual plan offered by Spitzer.”

He looked at the polls.

Let me add to that. He looked like a fool. From what I've read, he bypassed the NY legislature to issue this anti-American decree and threatened to take legal action against any clerks who refused to go along with his policy.

72% of New Yorkers, including democrats, opposed him and my guess is that he was advised by shrewder pols to throw in the towel on this one.

It doesn't entirely get Hillary off the hook.

Shrillery should be asked point-blank (no wiggle room), YES or NO, will she vote for that bill if/when it comes up in the Senate. Better yet, will she take the lead as a co-sponsor in the Senate and work hard for the passage of such a bill working toward a nationwide ban on licenses for illegals?? YES or NO, Shrillery, no waffles or flip-flops.

There’s a new ‘RAT debate coming up and this would be a great question for Wolf Blitzer to ask, unless he’s too intimidated by all the warnings to him from Clintonistas that he’d better be nice and servile and kiss up to Shrillery.

[I don’t know what the legal mechanism is for Peter King’s bill, but usually I think something like that on the federal level has to be tied to federal transportation funds, i.e., the feds can’t write law for state DMVs but they can say “only states which enact THIS policy are eligible for federal transportation funds??? Something like that....]

Total b.s., Shrillery!!!!

No state ought to provide driver’s licenses (or any type of legal ID) to anyone who is not in the country LEGALLY. We don’t have to have “comprehensive immigration reform” of a liberal b.s. nature to apply sensible and rational LAWS and to require LEGAL behaviors.

AND, since it’s been well known at least since 9/11 (should have been well known forever) that terrorists can take advantage of such big loopholes as programs to provide legal status or documents of any kind to people in the country illegally, it ought to be a no-brainer (even for liberals) that such shamnesty coddling of illegals is BAD for national security as well as a coddling of criminals.

” We don’t have to have “comprehensive immigration reform” of a liberal b.s. nature to apply sensible and rational LAWS and to require LEGAL behaviors.”

AMEN, brother!!!

Oklahoma’s new laws, cutting off all benefits, and making the transport and harboring (which includes renting an apartment) illegal aliens demonstrates the only immigration reform that is needed. Illegals are leaving the state in droves. Now, if we can just pass it in more states. Let those few states who don’t go bankrupt when all the illegals go there.

Hillary probably gave him a call and ordered him to shelve it until after her election, or else, meet some of her people in Marcy Park.

Like a typical democrat, he didn't change his mind because he admitted that the plan was the wrong thing to do and would hurt the country, but because the polls said that only 25% of New Yorkers would vote for him in the next election.

Trust me, if there is any way he can figure out how to give New York's illegal aliens drivers licenses and therefore get their votes without losing the election, he will do it.

If only it could be stopped in North Carolina, but the Governor here, ‘easely’ is a demonrat of the highest order. easley even lied in his last campaign about issuing driver’s licenses to illegals. Some of the 911 hijackers had driver’s licenses from North Carolina. easley Lied and People Died. But easley is a democrat, and the old media in North Carolina refuses to call the governor on his lies.
