He looked at the polls.

Let me add to that. He looked like a fool. From what I've read, he bypassed the NY legislature to issue this anti-American decree and threatened to take legal action against any clerks who refused to go along with his policy.

72% of New Yorkers, including democrats, opposed him and my guess is that he was advised by shrewder pols to throw in the towel on this one.

It doesn't entirely get Hillary off the hook.

Yes, indeed. Furthermore, once the clerks in Erie and Niagara Counties developed the plan to report illegals to the authorities, Spitzer knew he couldn’t win.

A lot of credit should go to Congressman Randy Kuhl this morning; even though he’s a Republican (and you wouldn’t think of him as having much influence here) he’s the one who helped spearhead this opposition from Day One.
