Cheering crowd attends disputed ordination of two women as priests

ST. LOUIS — To the Roman Catholic Church, the ceremony was not an ordination. In fact, it wasn't even Roman Catholic. But to two women and the approximately 600 people who came to cheer them on, history was made Sunday in St. Louis as the two became the first women ever in the city to be ordained as Catholic priests.

And the first ever, perhaps in the world, to be ordained in a synagogue.

Rose Marie Hudson, 67, of Festus, and Elsie Hainz McGrath, 69, of St. Louis, were ordained as priests by an organization called Roman Catholic Womenpriests, which defines itself "as an international initiative within the Roman Catholic Church."

Not only is the Archdiocese of St. Louis upset about the women participating in an ordination ceremony, but the church and others in the interfaith community were upset that the Central Reform Congregation, in the Central West End, hosted the event.

"The event of today is really very sad because the name Roman Catholic has been misused and misapplied," said Dr. Lawrence J. Welch, a Kenrick-Glennon Seminary theology professor. "There's been no ordination of Roman Catholic priests. In fact, there has been a profaning of something Roman Catholics believe is very sacred."

“I am so sick of these travesties being treated in the media as valid ordinations. If I declared myself President of the United States and had a “ceremony” and everything would the press make a big deal about how I was the first Canadian president?”

No, you can’t be president. I am president, and I am actually the first woman president! I was inaugurated in March of 2007 down in the family room, right in front of the Stairmaster.

We have it on film, so you know it’s true!!!

The sacrament of Baptism pours out the Spirit into every Christian woman and the Catholic Church has not lacked for prophetic women (St. Catherine of Siena, Blessed Angela of Foligno, St. Edith Stein).

But the matter of ordination to the priesthood is not solely a matter of being infused with the Spirit or of prophetic witness.

Joel does not speak of daughters or handmaids offering sacrifice or becoming priests.

Sorry, but there's nothing in either verse about it being "understood by all in their own native language". OTOH---I've got several folks in my ROMAN CATHOLIC Bible study class who have had incidents of both speaking in and interpreting "tongues". And the Church has many instances of women saints being prophetesses.

Acts 2:1-6 Describes the *event* so ... Could you please then interrupt Acts 2:6 Now when this was *noised abroad* (literally = this voice having come) the multitude came together, and were *CONFOUNDED*, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. ?????? Verse 9 describes the languages that were present that understood one voice in their own language. This does not speak about an unknown gibberish tongue rather one that everyone understood in their own language out of one mouth.

According to the article, they had a woman from Germany who calls herself a bishop perform the pseudo-ordination.

While they're at it, maybe they should have a canonoization ceremony and canonize some heroines of the feminist movement, like Margaret Sanger and Bella Abzug.

The Catholic Church is now allowing women to be priests?

No. Pope John Paul II (R.I.P.) explained in an infallible document that the Church has no authority to ordain women to the Priesthood.

This was a group of women playing dress-up. It was not a Catholic ceremony. They are not Priests, indeed they are not Catholics anymore as by their schismatic action they have removed themselves from the Church.

For a real ordination you need a lawfully consecrated bishop, which was lacking in this case, and even a real bishop can’t ordain ineligible persons, such as an unbaptized adult male, or a 4-year-old boy even if he has been baptized...or a baptized woman.

It’s not just in the Catholic Church. The Bible doesn’t make any provisions for females to be leading a church. Some are going to attack me for this, but it is the Truth. Someone show where it says, in the Bible, a woman can be a leader of a church? I’m not absolutely sure, but I will speculate that it goes back to the beginning when God created Man, and Woman was made from Man. Not that women were insignificant, they played crucial roles in the Bible, but not in the capacity of a church leader. But if the Bible says it, it must be so. You either believe all of the Bible or none of it.

BS. They were not ordained as Catholic Priests. They were designated as priestess wannabes.

"This does not speak about an unknown gibberish tongue rather one that everyone understood in their own language out of one mouth."

Which is precisely what the members of my Bible study class say happened to them.

But your INTERPRETATION (note, not "interrupt") is nuts. The ones who were "speaking in tongues" were the Apostles, not the Holy Spirit. And "noised abroad" usually means, "once word had spread"...

Personally I have never met an ordained preacher/priest who is a female. I did attend a Lutheran wedding once that was performed by a woman. I do not know what her title was/is, all I remember she liked to talk and talk a lot.

Must be ELCA. Those folks have been spending too much time with the Episco-pagans. I'm Missouri Synod Lutheran. We're old school all the way. It's very refreshing for a former Episcopalian.

Uh, which means, it wasn't.

These women have about as much standing within the Catholic Church as Pope Pius XIII out there in his shack in Montana.

Let’s sum this up:

They’re not Roman,

They’re not Catholic, in any sense of the word,

They’re not priests,

They weren’t ordained,

I’m not even sure that they are women...

How is this news?
