Huckabee slides into second in Iowa
KCRG TV News, Iowa ^ | 11/8/2007

In what has become one of the least predictable presidential races in recent history, Mike Huckabee, the far-right conservative Baptist pastor who likes to make jokes and play his guitar, has moved into second place in polls in Iowa.

Sixty-five days remain before Iowa's caucuses, and until now Huckabee was a far cry from the lead, which has been solidly held by Mitt Romney.

He doesn't have Rudy Giuliani's celebrity status or John McCain's gravitas -- or anywhere near the warchest of Mitt Romney -- but Huckabee has quietly established himself as a godsend to the religious right, principally due to his skepticism of evolution, vehement opposition of gay rights, and aggressive stance on Iraq.

Huckabee knows that Christian conservatives have heretofore lacked the perfect fit in a candidate, and has set about quietly becoming their top choice.

Despite his conservatism, he's also a fan of the liberal arts and education spending. He recently told Northern Iowa University students that there was too much of a focus in academia on math and science. "Math and science without music and art, is like trying to fly an airplane with a wing on the left, but without one on the right," he said.

As far as all fifty states go, Huckabee was polling Wednesday in third place behind Giuliani and Fred Thompson and ahead of Romney and McCain.

However, despite recent gains Huckabee is still short on capital. As of last month, he has only raised $2.3 million. This is in comparison to Romney's impressive $62 million.

Ugh. You’d think more people would be aware of the Huckster’s record.

I do like the part about the election being unpredictable. It makes it interesting but also very stressful. I am thrilled that Duncan Hunter is going to win the nomination!!!

What's the deal? Is he Hillary's hand-picked fall guy...hence the attention from the MSM?

When it comes to the MSM it's about anyone but a conservative.

Mike Huckabee, the far-right conservative Baptist pastor

If he was truly a "far-right conservative," the pissy boys on leftwing cable wouldn't be sucking up to him. This clown is a wolf in sheep's clothing, devoid of self-awareness. Another domestic "compassionate conservative," like the 'decider' who 'decided' that opening the gates of the land to hoards of illegal nomadic savages was a great idea for America.

The Left-wing media has again picked the guy the Right is supposed to like.

Gotta give Dano his props. Huck has taken withering criticism and he’s sticking with him. I reckon he’ll come around to Hunter one of these days.

Sad isn't it? For this writer to call the Huckster a "far right conservative" is laughable. The MSM will push the fraud that is Huc, in order to fool the lazy, ignorant masses. I fear for our Republic.

God knows the gates were locked shut until he came along.

The MSM pretty well know the majority of the population are not going to elect a former Baptist preacher as President. And a former Baptist preacher representing the GOP, quite probably, would give the election to Hillary Clinton -- unless she has a few more bad performances in debates and stalls out before the Dem convention.

Why such a strong reaction to Huckabee. I know he has been weak on immigration and supported spending and tax increases as governor that made the Club for Growth pretty unhappy. He is not as solidly conservative as Hunter but compared to our current front runners isn’t he much more conservative. I for one would take Huckabee over Giuliani, Romney, Thompson or McCain any day. Would you agree that Huckabee is much better than them?

That has got to be one of the most asinine comments I have seen or heard all month!

Do you even read the threads at Free Republic?

Do you know anything about the candidates?

Huc would make GWB's domestic spending look conservative. Huc is a RINO liberal. Huc is an absolute fraud when it comes to true conservatism. Huc belongs in the democratic party. His statist actions shows clearly he has NO reverence for the Constitution.

Fred is the only candidate that Hillary and the evil MSM is afraid of. Fred is the only Republican that can unite conservatives and beat Hillary. The MSM will be going all out to destroy or ignore Fred.

Huckabee has been eating Giuliani’s and Thompson’s lunch on Intrade for a few weeks already.

I know that Huckabee is much more solidly pro-life than any of the big four. He is in favor of the federal marriage amendment. He is championing the FAIR tax which I very much like and he is beholden to religious conservatives and not the Rockefeller wing of the Republican party. Do I wish he was more fiscally conservative - yes, I very much do. This is why I support Hunter and not Huckabee. However, if Hunter loses I would trust Huckabee more on social conservative issues than I would any of the big four.

Fred is the only one of the big four who has decent positions and he will put his ultra federalism in the way of protecting innocent life. Not to mention the fact, that Fred seems to genuinly dislike social conservatives. If he is the nominee I will probably vote for him but its hard to get excited about. On the other hand, Huckabee has been been endorsed by some of the people that I respect most. Including Mike Farris (Founders of the Home School Legal Defense Association amd Patrick Henry College [my alma mater]) and Janet Folger who has spent her life fighting against abortion. They both support Huckabee strongly and I have a lot of respect for both of them. I know Dr. Farris well enough to know for sure that he would not support Huckabee unless he was sure that Huckabee would fight for our values.
