Joe's Debt (sob story)
some whiner | 2007 | Joe

Posted on 11/07/2007 10:51:58 AM PST by dynachrome

I didn't immediately realize, as I made my way through the enrollment lines at college, how much it was going to cost me to live in Pasadena. My college had no dormitories so all students had to find off campus housing and transportation to get to get to school. Tuition averaged $11,000.00 per semester and the school ran 3 continuous semesters per year.

In a sincere effort to fund my education, I turned to my college financial aid office, where advisors never even suggested federal funding or grants etc. . They simply directed me to private loan companies, who were more than wiling to lend me twenty thousand dollars when I needed it; which was each semester. It was a smooth process.

joeperez:

You see the difference here Joeperez. Doc-Joe states his situation, accepts responsibility and doesn’t ask for sympathy or a handout. Doc-Joe is behaving the way a man should.

Doc-Joe:

If I were hiring, I’d hire you in a minute. Now Mr. small “a” in America joeperez wouldn’t make it past our conservative HR head.

Believe nothing of what you hear or read and half of what you see.

Yeah, but which half??

I am sorry to hear of your problems Doc.

You cannot always control what life gives you, but you can control how you handle it (I think the Dali Lama said that - can’t take any deep meanful credit!)

You handled your situation like a mature, responsible adult. Other joe handled like a spoiled, immature child. It speaks volumes as to your character and values.

Good luck to you!

I claimed bankruptcy to rid myself of the remaining medical bills, but because of laws recently enacted by congress favoring the private banking industry, my student loans remained and continue to grow due to high interest rates.

He either didn't do enough research, had a bad lawyer, has overdramatized his situation (or all three). Courts CAN still discharge student loans, so long as certain criteria are met.
The first point that would be looked at is that in the case that you were forced to pay, you will not be able to maintain a minimal standard of living. The next point of consideration is if this difficulty in maintain finances will stretch out to a significant length of period over which you are expected to pay back the loan. The third and last criterion is that you have made an effort to repay the loan before you decided to file for bankruptcy. Your efforts to repay would usually be taken into consideration if you have been in repayment for at least five years. If you do not meet these criteria when you file for bankruptcy then it is unlikely that your student loan would be discharged.

If I’m ever in need of employment again, I’ll look you up. Thankfully, I just received an offer letter for my “dream job.” Good thing I didn’t give up trying...

I solved that problem early in life. I went to college on a half-bright scholarship (GI Bill). Poor little Joe could have done the same thing.

Sure he could have. I did not have the GI option but I worked in a factory for 2 years between high school and college and saved my money. Then during the four years of higher edumacation I always had two part time jobs. I don’t recommend that for a fast thinking eager beaver wheeler and dealer like Joe but it worked for me. On graduation day I did not owe one penny to anyone.

I've been where you are. You can tell a lot about a man by the way he handles adversity.

The best workers, in my opinion, are those who have struggled in the past and understand that employment is a privelege and not a right. They work hard and seldom complain.

I paid my own way through two college degrees by working full-time at some not-so-pleasent jobs. Once, I didn't have enough money to repair my car and hoofed it to work for 6 months. I lived on peanut butter, mac-and-cheese, and spaghetti for 6 years. I lived in cockroach-infested efficiency apartments.

Even if I could go back in time and make my early life more comfortable, I wouldn't. I wouldn't want to take the chance that I would someday end up whining about being mistreated by good people trying to help me grow up.

There’s nothing half-bright about going the military route. I have nothing but the greatest respect for those who serve - the same as all good Americans . You fit in my “struggled early in life category” and are a good prospect for employment like Doc-Joe. I’ve always had good experiences with vets, both as coworkers and direct-reports.

I’ve found when dealing with scam artists or “crooks”, is sometimes tv stations that have the “investigation team”, will do more for you to get things resolved then the BBB or even the Attorney General.
