Back in 2002, I wrote this....
"Personally, Id love to see our government abolish the 14th Amendment. One of the original intents of the Amendment was to make the children of slaves U.S. citizens in an effort to better assimilate them into American society. That good intention has been taken advantage of by people coming across the border eight-and-a-half months pregnant. The United States may just be the only country that allows foreign nationals automatic citizenship for their offspring and the fact that it is obviously now being abused is an understatement."It's comforting to know that Fred Thompson has publicly joined the program....

I agree with you. And I for one am tired of being labeled a mean spirited (An expression that has become extremely trite since it is USED AND OVERUSED BY THE LEFT) racist because I want the immigration laws of our nation strictly adhered to. LEGAL IMMIGRATION IS SOMETHING I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT, WHILE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION MUST BE STOPPED. Tough decisions must be made and turned into action for the sake of our nation and future generations of AMERICANS.
Tancredo and Hunter have been saying it for years and have even pushed legislation to do it. (That is to correct it, not do away with the amendment entirely, which is silly) Where was Fred then?
The law has been continually interpreted to mean that ANY baby born in the US is automatically a citizen. Fred knows that in order to change this, we’ll need legislation. I don’t believe an amendment is needed, just a vote in Congress.
He was never in the House of Representatives, so he wouldn't have had the chance to co-sign any of that legislation. Don't know if it ever came up when he was in the Senate; he was working on investigating corruption at the time.
“Don’t know if it ever came up when he was in the Senate; he was working on investigating corruption at the time.”
He could have brought it up in the senate. The trouble with Thompson is that all the wonderful conservative ideas he has now, he never championed when he was in the senate. Which leads me to believe he is a poser.
Just think of it as a kind of sick satire, a gang of Hispanics proudly, pretentiously calling themselves The Race ("all for us, nothing for you") calling us the racists.
The 14th is not all-inclusive. It is my understanding that children born to foreign diplomats or military personnel here for training are not granted citizenship.
If that is the case, then the illegals should fall into this category, as precedent already exists.
You've just described my problem with Thompson, and well, most of them! The only predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Wide eyed speculation and current revelations just won't cut it.
“Good on Fred and Good on Bob Parks”
BUMP
“This amendment has been greatly abused from what it was originally intended for and needs to be done away with. As long as were doing that make it 10 years retroactive”
BUMP!!
“Just think of it as a kind of sick satire, a gang of Hispanics proudly, pretentiously calling themselves The Race (”all for us, nothing for you”) calling us the racists.”
Kinda hard to swallow, ain’t it :-)
Will the real Fred Thompson please stand up?
Fred Thompson on a path to citizenship: [B]ecause we allowed ourselves to wait until we woke up one day and found 12 million illegals here, theres no easy solution. And I think that you have to realize that youre either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. Youre going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or youre going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that its unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law. (Fox News Hannity & Colmes, 4/3/06)
Fred Thompson on the problems with cracking down on employers: We havent enforced the law, in terms of employers. For 20 years, weve not enforced the law, and thats a part of the problem. You cant enforce it all on the backs of the employers. People falsify information that they give employers and all that. Thats not a solution to the problem. (Fox News Hannity & Colmes, 4/3/06)
Fred Thompson on his skepticism of a brick-and-mortar border fence: FOXs ALAN COLMES: You dont put up a fence, either, do you? Is that bad neighbor policy, put a fence up? THOMPSON: If it would work. I mean, I dont know thats a technical problem. In this day and age, I would not think you would have to use bricks and mortar to get that job done. But we ought to do everything that we can to get it done to the extent that we can and then, as I say, I think people would be willing to take a look at the rest of the problem, what we do with the problem that we created. (Fox News Hannity & Colmes, 4/3/06)
Fred Thompson on enforcement first: We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with. I mean, theres really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, Im concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million. So thats why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary. (Foxs Fox News Sunday, 3/11/07)
Fred Thompson on not rounding up illegal immigrants: You know, if you have the right kind of policies, and youre not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once theyre here, theyll go back, many of them, of their own volition, instead of having to, you know, load up moving vans and rounding people up. Thats not going to happen. (Foxs Fox News Sunday, 3/11/07)
It’s simple. Fred had a conversion on the road to Des Moines. Very convenient.

Washington, D.C. Republican presidential candidate Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) criticized fellow GOP contenders Thompson and Romney after they released position papers on illegal immigration apparently discovering only just recently the policy he has been advocating for years.
I agree 100%!! I am voting for Ron Paul, there’s no question in my mind!! these democRATS need to be tried for treason with the laws they are trying to pass.. they are defying our constitution!!!!
The 14th ammendment has been twisted, broken and burned. The Illegals and the dems are abusing it to the point of the whole thing being trasonist against our country.. Any politician caught aiding and abedding an illegal alien of this country should be jailed and charged with treason against the United States Of America...
If you noticed, I have been very critical of Thompson on the illegal immigration front. He has been vague and “wobbly” at different times on this subject. Hunter has always been my first choice, but the MSM, RNC, and the rest of the rogues have essentially caused a Hunter “blackout”.
I have met the family and have donated twice....problem is, I don’t have 30 million dollars I can give him. So what do we do? I will not vote for Rudy, or Romney or Hucksterbee, but Thompson is notas bad as these transparent cons. If Hunter cannot emerge, I definitely want him as VP or head of Homeland Security. To me, illegal immigration is on the verge of destroying the USA; al queda nothwithstanding!
“Any politician caught aiding and abedding an illegal alien of this country should be jailed and charged with treason against the United States Of America...”
I agree.......where do we store them all?
If Illegal Immigration is a big deal to voters, they’ll choose the best candidate. My hope is that Pro-Life, anti-illegal immigration, strong WOT and pro-america will resonate. It’s the primaries. Pick the best candidate who fits your viewpoint and back him up.
Yep.
Senator Jacob Howard said the following about his proposed 14th amendment in 1866.
