Christian conservatives want more respect. They were instrumental in propelling George W. Bush to powertwiceand now they're feeling neglected. At a "Values Voters" summit in Washington last week, leading evangelicals gathered to speak out and take a straw poll. The survey showed how unhappy they are with the twice-divorced, pro-choice Republican front runner for the presidential nomination, Rudy Giuliani. He got less than two percent of the overall vote. (Some Christian activists have threatened to back a third-party candidate if Giuliani wins the GOP nomination.)
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won the straw poll of 5,775 conservatives, which included voters who have been able to cast online ballots since August. But many evangelicals are uncomfortable with Romney's Mormon faith. That may have factored in the voting of people who actually attended the summit: Romney lost that tally by a wide margin to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who is also an ordained Southern Baptist minister. To better understand the current thinking of Christian conservatives, NEWSWEEK's Jeffrey Bartholet and Eve Conant spoke to Richard Land, a leading evangelical who serves as president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Excerpts:

Correction: Giuliani and the RINO elites behind him are CAUSING division.
Wait a minute... a few months back that was standing up for principle. ;-)
As you say. Newsweek, like ABCBSNBCPBSNPR, is a shill for the Democrats/
You are right but many will just sit home.
What about Rudy?
“These people are stalinist. Dont say I didnt warn you.”
No Rudy, No Problem.
Dont say I didnt warn you.
I totally agree with you. They remind me of the little eight year old girl going to Sunday School with a friend and being brow beat because someone said she was not “saved.” Whose decision is that? Not some blow hard!!
These people are a turn off and hopefully, will not be taken seriously. Let them form a third party if Rudy is the nominee—they will get as much as Pat Buchanan did with the Reform Party.
Who can trust Rudy?
With Evangelicals, there must be some trust, and some genuine meeting of the outward belief meeting actions, and with Rudy, there has been -0- of that happening.
That would leave Rudy to chase the same votes as Hillary.
Although I must admit you are very smart to be weary and also experience has made you see it doesn't always work out the way we hope when we help put in office pro choice candidates to ward of a liberal! It is risky for sure! I am thinking Russian Roulette here.
But at least for me there are two very strong issues I am not going to budge about and that is gay marriage and support of abortion. The question for me is winning the battle winning the war? Or if I lose the battle will I win the war? We all want to win the war in the end, but we don't want to be devastated and gutted (i.e. Hilary win). So I guess I come from not wanting to be gutted perspective right now. I'd like to win both battle and war but it doesn't always turn out that way. I will probably be kicking myself for even suggesting a compromise later today! Especially as I do not believe there is any evidence to support my game plan as ever having worked. But it is something to think about.
I will pick when and where to fight with a larger perspective and fight like heck!! It is risky though as you say. I just look at the larger picture with Hilary as our president from a pro life perspective and maybe even gay marriage and I feel hopeless, not to mention the fiscal and even conservative cultural perspective (think Fairness Doctrine).
At least with a pro choice hawk and fiscal conservative with an R following their name is a chance to fight and fight hard. With Hilary there is nothing. It is not pure for sure though. But there is a fighting chance (or at least a small hope of one.)
For the record I really like Romney. I also like Guiliani and am disappointed about his feelings regarding abortion and have no idea where he stands on gay marriage. However I am staying engaged and weighing pros and cons. I appreciate your engaging my posts. It helps me to flush some stuff out. It is great we have so many candidates vying for the position, however it is also tough as there is no global clear cut winner as there was with Bush Two.
I was just thinking “Two words” when I scanned your post.
Two Words: FRED THOMPSON
“Even if Giuliani wanted pro-abortion judges, Republican senators wouldn’t support them”
You mean the same way that the “small government” party fought Bush tooth and nail on his high spending ways?
Oh...wait a minute, they didn’t.
Well, thank God evangelicals are not stupid, and will never let Hill and Bill reign as our CICs.
They will not do that to our guys out in two war theaters sweating and bleeding.
You are SO right; socons just LOVE abortion, gay loving “Republicans”.... By golly Rudy is a SHOO-IN!
“That would leave Rudy to chase the same votes as Hillary.”
Yet another thing they would have in common.
Of course it’s about power.
Obviously bible thumpers care more about getting their way than the welfare of the country.
See post #73.
Who knows. Maybe a very conservative candidate will resonate with the whole country (except hard core libs) when debates with Hilary start (I think we can safely assume somewhat that she will be the Dem candidate).
We just do not know this yet.
When are the primaries exactly? How much time do we have to really take these poll comparisons against Hilary seriously?
The questions the TootyFruityRudytards need to ask are these, “Do I want Hillary in the White House?” “Just how much satisfaction am I going to get by watching Kommerade Hillery abuse the office?”
Obviously Rudytards care more about getting their way than the welfare of the country.
***There, fixed it for you.
I think Land's summary above is EXTREMELY generous in saying that many evangelicals would give it the title of "4th Abrahamic faith". Most would say its simply a cult.
Regardless, I can't believe evangelicals have brought the party to this point; arguing over individual religious categorization. I could absolutely care less, and I think most Republicans feel the same way, even if they are hesitant to admit it.
