COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- Thousands of minks escaped from a fur farm in western Denmark — possibly set free by animal rights activists, police said Monday.

Authorities and residents were chasing down about 5,000 minks from the farm near Asp, 200 miles northwest of Copenhagen, police said.

Investigators believe animal rights activists raided the farm overnight to set them free . . .

A few will, long enough to breed with the wild mink. In a few years, the wild will exhibit silver gray and other unique colors not usually found in nature.

My guess is that there will be a quick die-off among them.

1. Pen raised minks may not be able to adjust to finding their own prey for food.

2. Too many minks in a relatively small area means there will be too many for the natural food ecosystem to supply them.

My mom had a coat with a mink collar and mink cuffs in the late 60’s. I never considered it more than just a status thing. But now that I’m old, I wouldn’t mind a mink “show-off” coat. Although Florida isn’t exactly the place you’d really need one.........................

None of them will survive outside a week.

It's gross. In previous mink "rescues", the commercially raised and suddenly released minks don't know squat about survival. Male minks will attack each other trying to establish territory, and minks that invade nearby farms will kill any chickens, etc. Minks that run across roads/highways can be squashed, and the minks that run off into forests will most probably starve to death, or killed by other animals. This is not about "Free Willy", this means the cruel death of almost all the "freed" minks.

We can debate all day long about commercially raising minks for future fur coats, but letting these cage critters loose to die in a number of horrible ways is not glorious at all.

What couldn’t they at least let some beavers go?

Perhaps restock the Virgin Islands?

Nutria is a BIG WATER RAT.........

^^^

If the celebrities want nutria fur, they can come to Maryland and trap the ugly little stinkers. They are a problem as an alien species here ever since someone released them into the wild many, many years ago. They are destroying habitat like crazy.

Nutria are also found in the southern USA and do have fur, as do beaver and muskrats.

My wife had a mink coat that was given to her. Ironic considering she is an animal rights kook. She swore it was the warmest thing imaginable. She eventually gave it to a theatre group.
