SAN DIEGO -- With fire spreading quickly westward, San Diego County officials ordered the evacuation of a huge area east of Interstate 15 between Del Dios Highway and Highway 56 early Mon"This is the worst fire this county has ever seen -- worse than the Cedar Fire [of 2003]," Sheriff Bill Kolender said.
At a news conference shortly after 6 a.m., officials said fires had spread dramatically overnight, whipped by fierce Santa Ana winds. They said fire had jumped Interstate 15 at Lake Hodges and was burning in parts of Rancho Bernardo. Because of the explosive and unpredictable nature of the blazes, all residents living between Interstate 15 and Interstate 5 from Del Dios Highway in the north to Highway 56 in the south were told to begin evacuating.
"This fire is moving very quickly," San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said. "Watch TV, listen to the radio and have your car prepared to leave."
Among the communities in the evacuation area are Rancho Sante Fe, Carmel Highlands, Rancho Bernardo, Del Mar Heights and Fairbanks Ranch and parts of Rancho Penasquitos.
Officials have opened Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley to handle the large number of evacuees.
Sanders asked everyone in San Diego County to minimize the use of cell phones to leave the airways free for the use of emergency personnel.day.

Nephew in Poway has not evacuated yet. Waiting for further instructions. Whole family is there, with bags packed. They don’t want to go to the Stadium for obvious reasons. Word that the military base nearby can accept refugess.
So are you telling us that you supported Arnold because he was the best candidate, or because you believed that unless conservatives went for Arnold, Bustamante would win the recall plurality?
The latter case is more interesting because if you had picked Arnold as preferable on policy, you'd have to explain why Arnold is preferable to McClintock on that basis. I don't think you can do that on policy distinctions without buying into a liberal agenda. Therefore, you ACCEPTED Arnold because you FEARED McClintock wouldn't beat Bustamante even when you were offered hard polling data to the contrary. Buying into a false premise when you were offered hard contraindicating data indicates a need to be certain, even to the point of accepting less than you want, which is effectively risk aversion to the point of fear. You chose to ignore all the data presented to you that Arnold was truly a liberal thus producing a result no better than Davis (he's actually been worse), indicating that your internal justification in the need to be certain of "victory" was bordering irrationality.
Irrational fear is craven. QED.
So, you now have the opportunity to set things right and admit to the forum that supporting Arnold, a posturing, profligate, big-government happy, crooked, homophilic enviro-wack flake, was a bad idea. Arnold did NOTHING about the leftist policies that abet overstocked fuels after the San Bernardino and San Diego fires of 2003 other than offer window dressing to offset some of the cost of pleasing his bureaucrats' lust for paper.
These policies have wasted BILLIONS in capital. They have cost many lives. They have induced massive landslides and destroyed topsoil. They have abetted continuing weed infestations of huge proportions. I am asking that you admit that supporting the person principally responsible was a mistake.
I have pinged those who know where you stood and would be pleased at the admission. So there's nothing to fear. ;-)
From what I understand, they were not taking off because of the wind being so strong aloft.
CDF has a base camp >my words< at Gillespie where they have quite a few of the firefighting aircraft.
Until this morning, I had neither seen nor heard anything flying out of there.
Since I originally posted, I’ve heard a lot of aircraft leaving from Gillespie.
Praying that the winds stay light and they can get a handle on these fires today.
The heroic firefighters have been fighting a 48 hour battle just to keep structures from burning.
I am concerned about the status of I-5, power and communications today.
This could get ugly.....

Will we ever get a law that will allow arsonists such as those that may have started some of these fires to be EXECUTED? No ‘if’s, ‘and’s or ‘buts’. GONE!
No kidding. Every time one of these monster fires takes massive loss of life and property, I get a little hot myself. Best we remember that they are as monstrous as they are as a result of policy choices for which we are accountable.
I've been writing on this topic for over fifteen years. Conservatives have conceded the environment as an issue belonging to the left where there is no need. I keep getting the story, 'We care about the environment too, but we just don't want so much regulation.' So they cave to "less" of policies with results guaranteed to fail at great cost. Never do you see a conservative in a debate hold his opponent to account for the disastrous results, largely because the Republicans are totally ignorant of the consequences to the habitat these crooked bureaucracies were created to protect. If nothing is done to change that concession, in the decades to come, we will witness those tragic consequences. Such are the rewards of cowardice.
Corporate RINOs are largely responsible for this mess. Nixon signed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and NEPA, not because he cared but because our creditors wanted a way to game the system to enhance their returns. There were better ways to have fixed those real historical problems than instituting massive bureaucracies capable of selling favors. Don't think for a minute that both sides don't play that game.
I supported Arnold. Admitting that is hardly being fearful.
To me, Arnold promised to stop illegal alien driver licenses and to roll back Davis’ car tax.
Arnold also offered the opportunity to give the California GOP the appearance of populism. For example, Arnold has star power. Another example is that Arnold won an unprecedented gubernatorial recall. Arnold carried through on this thought by overwhelmingly winning his own re-election for Governor...hardly an insignificant feat for a Republican in California these days!
I like McClintock on policies, but he doesn’t have star power...he doesn’t play well with others...has no chance of giving the GOP in Cali a “populist” image...and has made serious enemies in the California legislature (granted, with people who *need* to be viewed as enemies, but this is hardly something that is helpful in the short term).
In my opinion, McClintock would have lost either the recall or his re-election. In either case he wouldn’t be in Office today to appoint a GOP Senator if either position became available.
In contrast, Arnold was the correct bet for such a situation because he *is* still in Office...which makes him available to appoint a GOP senator if the opportunity arises.
None of the above is craven. All of the above is calculating. There is a difference.
Much of the wildfire problem is a man made problem and one beset by bizarre environmental considerations.
I’t about time Arno and George capitalize on the politics of this situation and not blame it on some freak “weather event” caused by global warming.
Absolutely incredible, but at the same time entirely believable in times like these...
