Tutankhamun's true face to be revealed

By Nigel Reynolds, Arts Correspondent
Last Updated: 2:55am BST 22/10/2007

The true face of Tutankhamun, the boy king who ruled Egypt 3,500 years ago, is to be revealed to the public for the first time.

Only a handful of experts have ever seen Tutankhamun's true likeness

To coincide with the opening of the exhibition of the treasures of Tutankhamun in London next month, Egyptian archaeologists are to put his mummified body on display in Luxor.

Only a handful of experts have ever seen the 19-year-old pharaoh's true likeness.

Though not the most important of Egypt's ancient rulers, Tutankhamun has exercised a strong pull on the Western imagination since the discovery of his virtually intact tomb by the British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922

Dr Zahi Hawass, head of Egypt's archaeological services, who arranged the London exhibition, says that displaying the mummy will help to preserve the remains.

He intends to remove the mummy from its original golden sarcophagus which lies in a stone sarcophagus and place it in a climate-controlled plexiglass case in the antechamber of the tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

After the last of a series of investigations and tests by a team of scientists in 2005, a three-dimensional reconstruction was made of the king's face from CT scans. They showed the young king to had an unusual flat head, a large nose and a protruding upper jaw.

A 3,000-year-old mystery is finally solved: Tutankhamun died in a hunting accident

The Independent (UK)
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Published: 22 October 2007

The mystery behind the sudden death of Tutankhamun, the boy king who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago, may have been finally solved by scientists who believe that he fell from a fast-moving chariot while out hunting in the desert.

Speculation surrounding Tutankhamun's death has been rife since his tomb was broken into in 1922 by archaeologist Howard Carter. X-rays of the mummy taken in 1968 indicated a swelling at the base of the skull, suggesting "King Tut" was killed by a blow to the head.

More recent studies using a CT medical scanner, however, revealed he suffered a badly broken leg, just above his knee just before he died. That in turn probably led to lethal blood poisoning. Now further evidence has come to light suggesting that he suffered the fracture while hunting game from a chariot.

The new findings are still circumstantial but one of Egypt's leading experts on Tutankhamun will say in a television documentary to be screened this week that he believes the case is now solved on how the boy king met his sudden and unexpected end.

The Independent says Tut died in a hunting accident, not as a result of murder:

“It’s insulting. These Egyptian artefacts have dignity and therefore we should keep this dignity. I will never — [even] if they give us a billion dollars — show an Egyptian exhibit next door to a casino.”

We know what you are Zahi, now we are just haggling over the price...

“If there is a casino in the dome, I will not send the exhibits to London,” declared Zahi Hawass, the secretary-general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. “It’s insulting. These Egyptian artefacts have dignity and therefore we should keep this dignity. I will never — [even] if they give us a billion dollars — show an Egyptian exhibit next door to a casino.”

OK.

No sweat.

There's a couple Spitfires still sitting around, a bunch of guys in tall fur hats, horses, and maybe we can get Boy George to stand in for a couple of sets.

When you realize that Iraq and Saudi Arabia have the oil, Syria and Iran have the missiles, and Egypt has..................

Give us a call and we'll see if the androgynous 'boy king' will fit into the schedule.

Ta!

from Karnak Temple:

Queen Ankhesenpaaten, (King Tutankhamun’s Wife)
http://www.southerncrossgalleries.com/images/africa/africa_00148.jpg

The large double columnade inside the temple was erected by Tut, as his cartouche is found near the top of at least one of the columns; the other instances of his cartouche were recarved in the 19th dynasty so that Ramses II “the Great” could take credit for their construction. Because the surviving Tut cartouche is so close to what was the ceiling, either it was missed in the dark, or no one cared to climb up, or even, possibly, to make sure the real builder was accorded proper credit. It’s the taller one shown in this image:
