UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Orange County:
Homes now threatened in Silverado Canyon

- 2:20 p.m.

The Santiago fire is again sweeping toward Silverado Canyon, and fire officials warned that it could be within minutes of coming over the ridgelines there. Orange County Sheriff's deputies were going through the canyon to evacuate any remaining holdouts.

The fire had been bulling its way through the isolated wilderness of the Cleveland National Forest, and fire officials said earlier in the day that it no longer appeared to pose an immediate threat to homes. But now, it was once again on the move to the north, and once again menacing Silverado Canyon.

A strike team of nearly 200 firefighters was in the canyon, their only orders to protect the homes there. The fire appeared to be threatening the back end of the canyon, where there are at least 100 homes.

See the status above. It ain’t over until it’s over. There are still a few whopping fires going.

Even when “contained,” most of the estimates say it will take another week after that before all the fires are out (i.e. early November, assuming no big weather changes).

SAN DIEGO

Destroyed homes and restored power

Posted @ 3:46 PM

At the county’s briefing on the fire held earlier today, County Supervisor Ron Roberts said countywide the number of homes lost stood at just under 1,300. Sixty-one percent of the destroyed homes are in unincorporated areas, mainly in Ramona and Fallbrook, 25 percent are in San Diego, and the rest are in Poway and Escondido.

Roberts said 12,600 people are still without power, but that service has been restored for 76 percent of those who lost it during the fires. He said meetings would begin next week to discuss debris removal, cleanup and aid.
On Monday, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders will ask the City Council to wave building and demolition permit fees to speed recovery.

Already street sweepers and sidewalk sweepers are going through Rancho Bernardo.

Yep...Sometimes they’re weak, sometimes not. When they’re strong, as we all know....Watch out.

Some might not understand...The whole problem with them is they generally follow summer ...When everything is bone dry and ready to go up.
