UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

POTRERO – One person was killed and at least 17 people, including four firefighters, were injured Sunday as the Harris fire in East County burned at least 14,000 acres, state fire officials said.
Several structures were burned, although an exact number was not released.
Shortly before 7 p.m., Cal Fire said that the Harris fire had two fronts. The southern head was burning past Barrett Lake Road south of state Route 94, and the northern head was burning toward Mother Grundy peak. It was 5 percent contained, officials said.
The blaze began about 9:30 a.m. east of Harris Ranch Road and north of state Route 94, about 70 miles east of San Diego. The cause is under investigation.
One structure was destroyed by noon, and officials ordered the evacuation of 100 homes and other structures on Potrero Park Road to the south and the area north of state Route 94, west of Harris Ranch Road and east of Potrero Valley Road.
By 4:30 p.m., the fire had moved from Potrero toward Dulzura. Cal Fire Capt. Matt Streck said he had seen several homes that had been destroyed.
“We are having a hard time staying ahead of it,” Streck told KGTV, Channel 10.
By 5:30 p.m., five helicopters, five air tankers, 45 engines and about 300 firefighters were battling the blaze, Cal Fire spokeswoman Audrey Hagen said.
Four firefighters – three men and a woman – were injured when their engine was engulfed by flames, Cal Fire officials said about 2 p.m. The location and time of the incident was not immediately available. A civilian was also burned.
Officials said the victims were flown to the burn center at UCSD Medical Center. Of the five victims, two were being treated in the burn center, two were in intensive care and one was in the emergency room, a hospital spokeswoman said.
About 5 p.m., sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust said that 698 East County residents in the fire's path had received reverse-911 calls telling them to prepare to evacuate. The notification area is 425 square miles and encompasses the area from Barrett Lake south to the U.S.-Mexico border and from state Route 94 and Emery Road west to Otay Mountain Truck Trail.

Good news for those in the Ramona area. The Witch/Ramona fire is now the number 1 priority of fires in the state, so they are hopeful that will speed up resources to prevent another Cedar fire type situation.
The way the Witch fire was splitting around Ramona was looking very similar to the Cedar, with one ‘fork’ heading down towards Poway/52 (read the Scripps Ranch area potentially being threatened depending on what happened).

The Witch Creek fire is now down into the San Diego River bed, where Cedar was, and is backing up Eagle Peak at the moment, also similar to Cedar. The big difference is that we didn’t have the long delay while the Feds screwed around this time. CalFire and the feds both jumped on this thing right away, and the resource orders went in early. We’re now getting considerable new resources and they’re staged on the West side. There’ll be a lot more coming in over night. It’s still a biggie with all the wind-driven fire problems, but we’re better off than we were at this stage in Cedar.

Correct, they’ve turned both 78 and 67 into one way only out of Ramona.
Advisory evacuations for NE Poway AND parts of Escondido (San Pasqual Valley area primarily, it sounds like) so far.
I know that 78 is a very narrow mountain road with sharp curves. I assume that 67 is no better. I'm very concerned for Ramona--but obviously, they have to get people out early, or they won't be getting them out at all. Also, 78 runs through the San Pasqual Valley, so I'd think that if they didn't evacuate Ramona early, people might be trapped at the bottom of the mountain.
What's the situation regarding the Wild Animal Park?

Well, that's not quite as bad as it sounds, because the San Diego city limits stretch up into the San Pasqual valley, right east of Escondido. So, basically, that's a repetition of the 'evacuate parts of Escondido' news that we've already heard.

Animals should be OK - many of them evolved in habits subject to wildfire, like the African savannas.
I’m a member of the San Diego Zoo. IIRC the Paradise fire in 2003 threatened the Wild Animal Park. One of the CDF battalion chiefs fighting the fire in the vicinity asked the zoo staff what the fire fighters needed to do to protect the animals. The zoo staff basically told CDF that they would leave the gates open to the fireproof concrete shelters and pens that are scattered throughout the park. The animals had enough sense to go to these places to escape the fire.

The animals had enough sense to go to these places to escape the fire. And hopefully all of us ape-like animals will have the sense to evacuate when the order is given. We have fires all over the Southland and have Santa Ana winds forecast for the next two days combined with no humidity and a record dry rainy season.

I’m with you.
FWIW I’m a volunteer emergency communicator here in San Diego County that just got off my shift. Based on what I’ve been hearing, I can not overstate just how serious this situation is.
Folks west of the Witch Fire area - including Poway, Escondido, Valley Center, Rancho Bernardo, and other locations along I-15 need to monitor the situation very closely. Know your evacuation routes, and be prepared to move quickly if/when the evacuation call comes. BTW, don’t solely rely on the Reverse-911 system - doesn’t work with cell phones, for example.

Nite, all - I have a feeling tomorrow’s going to be a long day. Thanks for the volunteer work. I am also signing off and trying to get some sleep. Have got that 5 day flu that has been going around. I have a nack of being sick when big news items occur. Had a flu for the last big Malibu fire. Was in Brentwood and was getting worried, but was too sick to do anything about it. Then when OJ made his getaway in his bronco and drove in front of my apartment complex on Sunset, I was passed out with a stomach flu on the couch. Got a feeling tomorrow could be another historic day here in the Southland.
