Pelosi's judgment questioned over Armenia issue

By Susan Cornwell 38 minutes ago

Democrat Nancy Pelosi's pledge of a new direction took a detour when she fumbled an Armenian genocide resolution and raised questions about her leadership as the highest ranking member of the U.S. Congress.

Pelosi, 67, speaker of the House of Representatives and next in line to the presidency after the vice president, swore she would push the controversial resolution to a vote, then blinked when some fellow Democrats withdrew their support in the face of furious reaction from Turkey.

President George W. Bush warned the symbolic resolution to affirm the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide would harm Washington's relations with Ankara. But as long as it looked like it would pass, Pelosi stuck to her guns.

When Democratic support started waning last week amid protests from NATO ally Turkey -- which denounced the measure as "insulting" and hinted at halting logistical support for the U.S. war effort in Iraq -- Pelosi wavered.

Critics say she miscalculated.

"It's certainly not her finest moment," said Michael O'Hanlon, senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

"There's been no great harm done, but we do have to find some ways to mend the U.S.-Turkish relationship."

Turkey accepts that many Armenians were killed in World War One, but denies they were victims of a systematic genocide.

Pelosi took office amid much fanfare 10 months ago. She proposed "a new direction" for America and vowed to challenge Bush on a host of fronts, including the Iraq war.

Her stumble on the Armenia resolution gave Republican critics more ammunition.

Some conservative commentators suggested the genocide measure was part of a hidden Democratic agenda to undermine the Iraq war effort, but other analysts said that was unlikely.

"I think it's more domestic politics, playing to interest groups, than backdoor foreign policy," said George Washington University professor of international affairs Henry Nau.

"If members of Congress are plotting with interest groups to weaken Turkish support of U.S. policy in Iraq and thus undermine American forces in Iraq, the drama thickens beyond my capacity to comprehend," he said.

Just because this idiot can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there. Everything the democrats do is to undermine Bush.

Two points, before we say the large scale killing of the Armenians was a genocide, one has to explain why the other Armenians in the Ottoman empire were not so killed. Was it because they were not involved in a separatist movement from Turkey and were not fighting on Russia's behalf? And, two, unlike the so-called Jewish lobby, the American Armenians do not even pretend that their requests help the interests of America. Why do not those bashers of the Jewish Lobby/Israeli Lobby, Walt and Meashermer, write about the interference in U.S. national interests by these American Armenians?

Come to think of it, does anyone remember the aggressive lobbying of the American Greeks against Turkey as regards Cyprus? Those greek fellows back then did not even claim their actions were in American interests yet they were more aggressive than the Jews as regards Israel.

Several democrats at work immediately were gleeful of the Armenian Genocide bill solely because it harmed our stability in Iraq. They want us out and willing to get it one way or another. I cannot deal with people like this.

What an interesting admission of personal feeble-mindedness and professional inadequacy. I would say the University should consider firing his sorry butt, but I'm sure it's tenured, like most university sorry butts are.

Right-o, Mr. O'Hanlon. The problem for Ms. Pelosi is, that double amputees can count on their fingers Pelosi's finest moments as Speaker...

At night. Dark parking lot.

Or just pick up a chair and brain them.

I am amazed at the restraint people have shown to traitors. When I worked in a nest of them, I look back on it now and marvel that somehow I am not in prison or dead.

Blinked? I thought the bug-eyed, reptilian looking, stretch Pelosi's eyes were crazy-glued open.

This isn't the first time Nancy's messed up big time on a foreign policy issue. First she screws up with the whole Israel/Syria trip, then she and her ox of a husband flub their meeting with QEII.

Pelosi’s judgment??

This brainless hag has never had a cogent thought, let alone a judgment. I think that she’s been on the same LSD trip since the 60’s.

How can we question the first woman Speaker of the House. Doesn’t anyone understand that the Congressional version of Katie Couric is above reproach because of her genitalia? The world would be a more peaceful place if woman ran things. I know, because I have been told this repeatedly by the MSM.

The undermining of the war effort by the libs in introducing this resolution is evident.

I wonder though, is it possible that Pelosi was set up by the Rep here? Perhaps a few Republicans initially offered their support knowing full well that they would withdraw it at the last minute, AFTER letting Pelosi hang herself thinking she had the votes for passage.

Judgment isn’t the only thing I’ve questioned, where Pelosi is concerned.

I must have missed the story on that one. What happened?

I don’t understand your response.

Our local Representative in Congress, George Radanovich, a conservative Republican and solid Bush supporter, introduced this resolution.

How was the introduction of the resolution done by Democrats given Radanovich is Republican? Also, how does having Democrats now backing off from support of the resolution, after warned by Bush of repercussions undermine Bush? Just curious.

There is going to be only one Alpha female in the Democrat party and it’s not Nancy. The invisible hand of Mrs. W.J.Clinton is pushing the Speaker out of the Speaker’s chair.

Sure it would. Nancy Pelosi is 2nd on the viciousness scale only to Hillary Klintoon.
