An Egregiously Reckless Resolution

Why, now, of all possible critical moments, are congressional Democrats insisting on passing a resolution guaranteed to offend Turkey, our vital ally in the Iraq War, by denouncing the Ottoman Empire's century-old massacre of Armenians as a "genocide"?

Nancy Pelosi and her cohorts have been warned that Turkey will be deeply offended by the move and may even take punitive action against us by withdrawing their permission for us to use Incirlik Air Base, through which well more than half of our air cargo passes in route to supply our troops in Iraq. Human Events editor Jed Babbin reports that some 95 percent of the new MRAP (mine-resistant, ambush protected) vehicles, designed to save our troops' lives, pass through Incirlik. Also as a result, Turkey might decide to attack Kurdish terrorist forces against our strong urging not to do so.

What on earth are Democrats trying to pull here? They are the same people that barely blanch when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denies the Holocaust. It's not like we need to worry about offending Iran, a charter member of the Axis of Evil and by last count a sworn enemy of the United States, actively working to defeat us in Iraq.

Democrats constantly castigate President Bush for alienating the international community by "going it alone." Their presidential candidates are united in promising that if their party recaptures the White House, they'll restore sound relations with foreign nations. In a recent speech, the irrepressibly garrulous Bill Clinton stressed that this would be a major theme in the next Clinton co-presidency.

So they can poke the President in the eye! They don't give a damn about our troops or the strategic situation in the Middle east. They simply want to say 'we are the real power in Washington'. Can you say treason?

What on earth are Democrats trying to pull here?

Just a wild guess: trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory because victory might make Bush look good.

An attack by Turkey into northern Iraq will destabilize that portion of Iraq.

That plus the possible denial of flights through Turkey in support of our troops would really put a damper on the success we are having now.

The Democrats are not only anti-American but can now be called UN-AMERICAN. Their thirst for absolute power in this country places them at odds with everything this country has held dear for over two centuries.

To the extent the resolution imperils American troops, it is egregiously reckless and indefensible at all levels.

What if prominent Armenians said resolutions are not necessary? "My gosh! What if Turkey said, 'Ok we did it'? Many in the world may tune out after that. It would harm our chances for accomplishing the real goal."

Mr. Harut Sassounian author, publisher, and prominent activist promoting Armenian issues and causes has stated that Resolution 106 is secondary. The primary task now is making Turkey pay.

Last summer the USC Institute of Armenian Studies sponsored a symposium on International Law & the Armenian Genocide: Recognition, Responsibility & Restitution.

Over the years each edition of an "Armenian genocide Resolution 106" brought widespread condemnation of Turkey.

BTW there is more than ample proof of Germany's complicity why not include Germany? One source is 'German Responsibility in the Armenian Genocide: A Review of the Historical Evidence of German Complicity' by Vahakn N. Dadrian.

At the symposium it was argued by experts "that the Republic of Turkey is liable for the massive deaths and destruction inflicted upon the Armenian population, because the modern state of Turkey is a continuation and not the successor to the Ottoman Empire . . . Turkey can be held responsible for the Armenian Genocide."

So what about litigation, where? One speaker argued that "a foreign state is not immune from the jurisdiction of U.S. courts if 'rights in property taken in violation of international law are in issue.'"

"[T]he U.N. Genocide Convention of 1948 can be applied retroactively because it is declarative of pre-existing international law, " said a paper submitted by an expert and read by Mr. Harut Sassounian.

Summarizing the symposium Mr. Sassounian wrote, "it is up to political leaders in Armenia and the Diaspora to carefully study the materials presented at this conference by international legal experts in order to seriously consider the steps that could be taken to seek redress for the Armenian Genocide in national and international courts."

This is for all the marbles vis-a-vis Turkey. Mr. Sassounian has stated that if they lose in court Turkey skates and Armenia is humiliated. So the Armenian Diaspora here, et al will continue to wage war against all and our national security be damned. IMO.

Comments about the symposium taken from a column by Mr. Mr. Sassounian.

Sorry, I don't buy it. President Bush CAMPAIGNED on a promise to recognize the Armenian holocaust. He's been president forqalmost 7 years, but he hadn't saw fit to honor that promise. Now, he thinks it is such a terrible thing. I guess he will be apologizing to Bill Clinton and Al Gore?

Turkey should realize that Democrat resolutions, like UN Resolutions, aren’t worth the paper they are written on.

Congressional turkeys offending Turkey: Jerks offending Turks. Film at 11.

OK, to be serious—as I’ve said many times, the Dems couldn’t have been more obvious with their chosen time to adopt this resolution. We should have condemned this ages ago, not now. Given their track record it’s not hard to guess that they’re trying to undermine the military and sabotage our efforts in Iraq before we win. Blatant treason.

George W. Bush for President
February 19, 2000

Mr. Edgar Hagopian
Mr. Vasken Setrakian

Dear Edgar and Vasken,
Thank you for your inquiry to my campaign regarding issues of concern to Armenian Americans.

The twentieth century was marred by wars of unimaginable brutality, mass murder and genocide. History records that the Armenians were the first people of the last century to have endured these cruelties. The Armenians were subjected to a genocidal campaign that defies comprehension and commands all decent people to remember and acknowledge the facts and lessons of an awful crime in a century of bloody crimes against humanity. If elected President, I would ensure that our nation properly recognizes the tragic suffering of the Armenian people.

The Armenian diaspora and the emergence of an independent Republic of Armenia stand as a testament to the resiliency of the Armenian people. In this new century, the United States must actively support the independence of all the nations of the Caucasus by promising the peaceful settlement of regional disputes and the economic development of the region. American assistance to Armenia to encourage the development of democracy, the rule of law and a tolerant open society is vital. It has my full support.

I am encouraged by recent discussions between the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan. The United States should work actively to promote peace in the region and should be willing to serve as a mediator. But ultimately peace must be negotiated and sustained by the parties involved. Lasting peace can come only from agreements they judge to be in their best interests.

I appreciate the tremendous contribution of the Armenian community to the United States. The Armenian community has been and will continue to be a model of dedication to values of faith and family.

Sincerely,

(signed)
George W. Bush

And to add to the level of evil they will go to, they commit this seditious act by using the tragedy of other people - if anyone claims to believe thePelosi gang gives a rats rump about what happened to the Armenians 100 years ago = they are either woefully naive or just plain lying.

This is a clear sign that the democRATS see that the Iraqi war is turning around in our favor so they have to do everything in their power to prevent that and cause more strife and hardship for the American military. They hate the military almost as much as they hate Bush. Traitors All!!

They have said—and severally— and often that their intent
was to force US out of Iraq and Afghanistan. This is but one of several attempts to defeat the surge —er uh Bush.
At any cost.

Should we institute sharia law here in the U.S. not to offend our Turkish superiors? It’s amazing how much money and aid we give to a country like Turkey and they boss us around.
