All eyes will be on Fred at the debate, but with an emphasis on the economy, pay attention to what Mitt says. He's the one with private sector experience - and success.

Actually, the smartest, most authentic, most honest guy with a real conservative track record that has never changed and everyone can check, is Duncan Hunter!

I agree that Romney is the most successful business man on the stage tonight. But always remember one thing........he didn’t get there by himself. Don’t forget the people working around him. Without them, he would be nothing. So what this says, basically, don’t rely totally on what he has done and think he did it all by himself.

I don’t care how smart Romney is. I still refuse to vote for a gun grabber.

With all his Education and private sector experience - and success, what does he have to say about 2A? Even more important what actions did he take regarding 2A while in power?

Carter and Clinton were supposed to be “the smartest guys in the room,” too.

Any chance the author of this article is a Romney supporter or relative?

Holy smokes! He got an MBA and a law degree simultaneously - from Harvard! Yikes! That is very impressive.

The thing I like about Mitt is that he is always a gentleman, and polite to everyone. That level of civility is very refreshing.

Will it win him the nomination? We’ll see, ay?

I don’t want Romney and I don’t want Bill Gates or Donald Trump. I also didn’t vote for Ross Perot. Business success is not the criteria I use for picking a President. Many of the most successful businessmen became that way by being ruthless and unprincipled. I’m not against a successful businessman, it just isn’t high up on my list of priorities for Presidential candidates.

If all eyes are o FDT, it is not good. Expectations too high. I like him and he gives an adequate speech but I still don't know for sure how good he is at thinking and answering questions on his feet. The media will tear apart anything he says.

The parts of previous debates I have seen involving R's are not terribly inspiring.

This nomination is Romney’s to lose and Fred’s to win. Both Rudy and McLame are out of it.

Among all the Republican candidates for president, the chronically striving Romney might be the smartest guy in the room. Armed with a law degree and a master's of business administration from Harvard, he's the well-prepped answer man on health care and immigration, and quick-draw responder to the urgent events of the media moment. Staples would be one of the great American business success stories. It's an $18 billion company with 1,700 stores. Christensen, now a professor at Harvard Business School, describes Romney as "a great helicopter pilot. He can go down to the level of detail to see what a person needs and can go up to see the big picture and then fly away when he has the right people in place," Christensen said.

This is exactly why I support Romney, and what a great metaphorical description - a helicopter pilot that can zoom small and big picture.

IMO the American people aren't going to buy (from a Republican candidate) the weak and unsophisticated arguments of the first and second Bush campaigns. Especially since we now see how Bush turned out to be. For the Republican candidate to have any chance to win, he must have the intellectual power to argue without having to resort to meatheaded repetition and populism - that's the Democrat's game. Romney's shear intellectual capacity gives him the ability to transcend the media and communicate the the American people. Any other candidate is going to get steamrolled, even if they win, like Bush has...as the conservative movement continues to die for lack of eloquent leadership.

The 100%ers would rather defend their shrinking ground with a wounded, poorly-armed but ideologically pure soldier rather than a skilled and armed soldier with an impure past. Noble, but you lose the battle and the war.

Wow. Rommey’s got a law degree. Doesn’t damn near every politician?

Fred has a law degree AND experience practicing it, plus plenty of experience in government. Plus Fred is a conservative.

Romney is supposed to be brilliant because he has a Hahvaad MBA. Of course, GWB has one also and he is supposed to be stupid. The MSM can’t get the frame straight.

Republicans must be portrayed as either stupid or mean-spirited -- preferably both.

Ann Coulter

Romney creates big problems for Democrats. They don't run on their unpopular leftist policies, but rather by demonizing Republican opponents (with assistance from the MSM). As Ann says, they do this by portraying the Republican as either stupid and/or mean spirited.

Stupid definitely won't work, Romney graduated from Harvard Law and Business, he did so cum laude and as Crain Scholar (top 5%) respectively. His business success demonstrates his real-world ability. The Dems won't want to bring up the intellectual qualifications of the candidates, as Romney would bury both Clinton and Obama.

This leaves them mean-spirited. Romney is preternaturally affable, so much so that the Dems are left with fuming about Romney being slick (a quality they laud in their presumptive First-Lady). Mean-spritited won't sell.

Their usual template not working, the Dems will need to ad lib. In their desperation, will go for the obvious, and vilify Romney's religion. This creates a problem of making a fine distinction between Romney and the Democrat Senate Majority leader, which will be difficult. They cannot relish using bigotry, and the religious background of neither Clinton nor Obama is receptive to scrutiny.

The Dem/MSM template will be fully operational with the other GOP frontrunners:

Giuliani--------------Mean-spirited.
Thompson----------Stupid + Mean-spirited
McCain-------------Mean-spirited.

Citing his proven record of results, Mitt received another endorsement today. Romney has the support of more Republican elected and grassroots officials in Michigan than any other Republican presidential candidate.

Former Lt. Governor of Michigan Connie Binsfeld Endorses Governor Mitt Romney:
“Governor Romney is the leader our country needs,” said Lt. Governor Binsfeld. “He is committed to strengthening our economy and adding jobs to the workforce, critical issues for the people of Michigan. Additionally, Governor Romney has a proven record on the issues facing our nation. He’ll keep taxes low, cut government spending, and reform healthcare. With Governor Romney, Americans know they have an exceptional leader with a proven record of results.”

There are thousands of liberal university professors who have a very high IQ, higher than any GOP or Democrat candidate I'm sure, but I don't want any one of them as my President and I don't want Mitt either. There are also many successful business men who run companies and corporations competently, but I don't want any of them as president either unless they fit the conservative pattern of the president I want.

Intelligence and a record of success are pluses for a presidential candidate, but traits such as high moral character and where a candidate stands on the liberal to conservative political spectrum are more important to me. Mitt's newly found "conservatism" doesn't fit well with his recent liberal record on 2nd Amendment rights, bogus homosexual "rights", and right to life issues. I will reluctantly vote for him if he's the GOP nominee, but I won't vote for him in the primary. If he should then win the Presidency in the general election (very doubtful) I don't have any favorable expectations for his administration.

This is the first debate that I will watch. Romney and Rudy have a long way to go to convince me that they are conservative.
