Thompson to Dobson (take a hike)
NRO ^ | 10/4/2007 | Byron York

It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:

A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…

I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…

Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"

I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

Who does this Dobson character think he is?

A person expressing views, just like you are.

Not at all, and I don’t appreciate words being put into my mouth.

I want a President who believes in God. Christian (Catholic OR Protestant,) Jewish, or even Deist. I want a President to acknowledge the basis God has in our Republic and our Constitution. I want a President that realizes Islam is evil, and that the Allah of Islam is not the God of Judaism and Christianity.

I don’t want/need a President that quotes scripture at campaign stops. I don’t want/need a President that feels the need to kiss the behinds of people who expect their candidate to have 100% perfect views.

Dobson was OUT OF LINE when he accused Fred of not being a Christian. And Fred was understandably pissed off about it. Dobson has no way of knowing Fred’s relationship with God or with Christ and had no business making such a statement. It also exemplifies the very thing that gives me nausea about what I call the Bible-Thumper faction of the conservative movement.

I totally agree! If this doesn’t make some of the sheep following Dobson think again, then they’re worse off than I thought. Many of them blindly follow his lead...

LOL....thank you, thank you, for the attack.

This Christian is voting for Mr. Duncan Hunter.

But really this is unimportant.

You are right I am not a republican. I quit the party in 2003. I am a conservative independent.

Okay.....so how...as a conservative independent are you going to have a voice with a Socialist RAT occupying the Oval Office AND the RATS a veto-proof majority in both houses of Congress...and them voting on possibly FOUR SCOTUS seats?

Do you feel ANY responsibility for that occurring?

People who withhold their vote in such circumstances and in such an environment are...INSANE...for want of another word.

Many Catholic Republicans are supporting Giuliani despite his heretical positions on a number of issues. It would be interesting to know just how many of these “Catholics” actually attend mass weekly. Regardless Thompson holds closer to Catholic/Christian principles than any candidate other the Brownback. To me, the order of selection goes Brownback, Thompson, Hunter, McCain.

Well I could vote for either Rudy or Romney if it came to that, but I really hope it’s Fred.

Romney has disappointed me twice lately. Once, with his unnecessary cruelty about Craig, who had been one of his strong supporters and part of his team. A simple statement that Craig had resigned would have been much more classy.

Second, he was really stupid on the Rush thing. Obviously he was woefully uninformed about Rush and the whole situation.

Whose side would you take in a fight between Rush and Media matters ?? Without knowing anything I would take Rush’s. And after he was finally informed of the truth, he still didn’t take much of a stand. Or no stand.

There are a lot of things to like about Rudy, but also a lot to be concerned about.

I just hope Fred keeps his balance and gets the nomination.

I will not have a voice if a socilaist republican is in the oval office either. And that is what Rino Rudy is.

Oh, I’m totally open to that possibility, and I’ll make up my own mind ultimately. But I am seeing it ALL OVER THE PLACE, not at all the MSM: Corner, blogs, elsewhere.

Look, he was asked, “Would you talk to Dobson,” and he shrugged it off. I think my answer’s far better.

Well he seems to be trying to order candidates to assume his viewpoint or else. Civil discourse is not conducted that way. Sounds a little over the top to me.

I’m Christian and Dobson doesn’t speak for me. I’m riding the Red Truck ..with dear rifle in hand, and I’m not alone.

I thought during the last two presidential elections that GWB was ‘conservative enough.’ I was wrong.

The difference is that GWB never promised to be conservative. We all just assumed he was pretending to be moderate to get elected, and would turn out to be conservative.

Fred, on the other hand is promising to be truly conservative, and he always has been a solid (if imperfect) one.

Angering Dobson is the same as angering God?

What did Thompson do to anger God in reference to Dobson?

Sorry, it was just an observation, not an attack. It seems, in both your first and second posts, that you harbor blanket judgements regarding “born agains” because of their judgements.

We are not all virtuous, we are not all judgemental. Like most groups we have a mix of good and bad.

I don’t want/need a President that quotes scripture at campaign stops. I don’t want/need a President that feels the need to kiss the behinds of people who expect their candidate to have 100% perfect views.

Neither do I. But I'm not talking trash about Christians.

"Bible thumper"? What's that mean? Someone who believes Scripture is relevant? No need to use such a derisive phrase when referring to "Bible-believing" Christians.

Dobson was the one dumping on Thompson. But Dobson is just one man, who was clearly in the yank for Gingrich (what'll Dobson do now that Gingrich bailed?) and Thomson isn't going to kiss his ring.

Dobson supports Gingrich? I see nothing 'Christian' about Gingrich at all!
