It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:
A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian
I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there
Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"
I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.
I like Dr. Dobson.
But Dr. Dobson has acted poorly towards Sen. Thompson. I still like the guy, but Im still going to vote for Sen. Thompson.”
I agree. Dobson has every right to get behind a favorite candidate and support him with his dollars and from his pulpit. But to publicly come out against Thompson because he does not think he is Christian enough is way out of line. Would he had done the same to Reagan who like Fred also did not where his religion on his sleeve?
This whole conversation confuses me.
Dobson said that he wasn’t aware of Thompson’s Christianity. Thompson doesn’t appear to make church-going a priority.
For recognizing this, Dobson is demonized. But when you recognize this, we’re supposed to honor you?
Are you agreeing with Dobson, then?
Okay, you just want to argue. (Response: “No, I don’t!”) I leave you to your folly. But I tried.
I do not know what is actually taking place with Dr. Dobson, but I have a belief that the 'old media' is involved to a point where 'divide and conquer' is the goal. Call me stupid, if you wish, but that is my belief. btw....I am not attempting to reeducate you, only typing what I think.....please feel free to say (type) what you think as well.....Conservatism benefits from people saying what they think.
Would I vote for a Jew or a Buddhist or a Hindu for President? I’m inclined not to.
Then why do you think that ALL SORTS of commenters from ALL SORTS of perspectives are saying the same thing about Thompson: no fire, no zest, disappointing speeches?
I’ll say it one last time: dismissing Dobson is just stupid. He does speak for a lot of people; and he certainly is identified with a constituency that is indispensable for any GOP candidate. And I haven’t seen one poll indicating that Thompson has support to spare.
Third party.
The moral “Majority” appears to be out to tank the next election, unless Dobson and his ilk get to annoint whomever they believe to be the “Chosen One”.

Interesting statement.
R-I-N-O = Republican In Name Only.
Therefore by definition IMO, not voting for the REPUBLICAN because he's not pure enough...makes YOU a RINO.
Some things are more important than your personal victory.
BTW...love your numerous threads on the Housing Market.
Dobson said about Fred Thompson: “Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for, but I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression.”
That’s what he said. He wasn’t aware whether or not Thompson is a Christian. He didn’t say, “He’s not a Christian.” He confessed that he didn’t *think* he was a Christian; that it was merely his *impression*.
The truth is, there’s little evidence of Thompson’s being a Christian, as many even in this thread have acknowledged. For example, he doesn’t fellowship with Christians, to my knowledge — that’s a indication that he might not be a Christian indeed.
That said, is this necessarily a reason not to vote for Fred in the primaries? No. I’m inclined to vote for Fred.
Well, duh. He doesn't claim to "speak for the entire Christian community." He speaks for himself. Is he allowed to do that?
You are right I am not a republican. I quit the party in 2003. I am a conservative independent.
That’s a weird thing to say. If you’re a Christian, then you are (to use Jesus’ words) “born again.” If you are not “born again,” then you are not a Christian, in which case you should not be insulted.
What makes you so sure that God hangs out with the likes of Dobson? That guy is enough to make anyone anti-Christian.
Not *this* Christian! And I know I’m not the only one!
I love this guy's straight answers. IMO Dobson has lost a lot of good will over Fred Thompson. At this point I suspect that Dobson's influence on this election is going to be nil.
Whoa! A bit of hatred for Chist-followers, hm?
To you dismissing Dobson is stupid. Dobson insults (and that is up to interpretation) Thompson, and it is suddenly Thompson's responsibility to put on a dog and pony show for Dobson. I like Dobson, but to me, he is wrong. He is the one who should be calling Thompson.
And... I think you are looking at the pregame warm-ups and deciding the game. I think we have along way to go in this presidential race... and Fred's support is not shrinking but growing.
Wow...how easy it is to be taken out of context....LOL
Dobson's attitude toward Fred Thompson has been anything but "Christian". He has made false accusations against Fred Thompson and suggests that because his approach to Roe v. Wade is not the same approach that Dobson takes, that somehow Fred Thompson is going to be unacceptable to Christians like Dobson.
I used to think that Dobson was a pretty good guy. Right now he is either senile or stupid. Dobson represents the stupid wing of the Evangelical movement. I don't consider myself a member of that wing.
Dobson can go pound sand. This Christian is voting for Fred Thompson.
