Thompson to Dobson (take a hike)
NRO ^ | 10/4/2007 | Byron York

It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:

A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…

I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…

Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"

I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

Yours is an interesting question, but your Koran reading, five time a day praying president would probably favor Sharia Law over the Constitution and might have less that a laissez faire attitude towards religious institutions maintained by infidels.

Fred will be different, and kick the Christians out of his ‘red’ truck.

Dobson was the one dumping on Thompson. But Dobson is just one man, who was clearly in the yank for Gingrich (what'll Dobson do now that Gingrich bailed?) and Thomson isn't going to kiss his ring.

I'm an evangelical Christian, and I have no problems with Thompson, nor is he trying to "kick" me out of anywhere.

Another born-again Christian response. You’re not going to forgive me? You’re going to judge me and call me names? You’re not going to pray for me?

The left plants statements "by Dr. Dobson" and he has had to take to the air waves on many occasions to correct them, just as Rush does.

Like or dislike Dr. Dobson, he has many adherents who would love to vote for Fred but don't need to listen to him respond to a false claim that Dr. Dobson made about him.

Great trick by the Left just as they do about Rush, take something completely out of context or completely make it up to start with.

What the heck are you talking about!!!! Which Republicans are "throwing the Christians out"?????

James Dobson is trying to LEAD Republicans out of the party with his intemperate and judgemental remarks.

Take the mote out of your eye. You're pathetic.

Yes, I have heard liberals use it, they are notorious for picking and choosing which parts of the Bible they will use. You can take lots of things out of context in the Bible - that’s been going on forever.

I responded to what Dobson said because it makes me sick to hear people say someone is not a Christian. Yes, there are those who it is as obvious as the light of day that they are not Christians - usually those individuals will loudly proclaim they are anti-Christian. But I don’t see anything in Fred Thompson’s past to make me think that what Dobson is attributed to having said about him is even remotely true.

If a person says they are Christian, I will take them at their word & give them the benefit of the doubt - I’ll let the Lord handle that for all of us. Dobson messed up & he should be very public in clarifying his statements - he hasn’t done that, so I tend to believe that he really said that. I think he has a little ego problem himself where he thinks he is in a position to state who is “Christian enough” or not - according to him. That really turns me off.

I’m not picking a fight either - I understand where you were coming from. I just didn’t want to leave the impression that I was a liberal - far, far from it. I must go to work now - have a nice day. :-)

I didn’t realize the “anti-Christian” comment was made so many months ago. Dobson’s apparently been against Fred from the beginning.

Wonder who he’s really shilling for.....

No I haven’t.

I am mighty tired of the “Holier than Thou” types of all stripes (Christian, Black, anti-this, pro-that, whatever) trying to force people to kiss their ring or jump through specific hoops for approval.

It’s a sick way to feed egos and self-esteem, and truly adds nothing to the debate.

I am a pro gun, anti-illegal immigration conservative, of undefined Christian belief that ain’t willfully been in a Church for a long time.

James Dobson does not tell me what tune to dance to, neither does the NRA, or any anti imigraiton advocates out there. I will make my own choices

Dobson is being used as another straw man for Fred and his followers to scuffle with. There’s really not much positive about Fred to trumpet so clawing and hissing at the critics is pretty much all they have left to fill the void.

Fred can’t win and Dobson isn’t obligated to support him.

I like Sen. Thompson.

I like Dr. Dobson.

But Dr. Dobson has acted poorly towards Sen. Thompson. I still like the guy, but I’m still going to vote for Sen. Thompson.

“Like or dislike Dr. Dobson, he has many adherents who would love to vote for Fred but don’t need to listen to him respond to a false claim that Dr. Dobson made about him.”

Vast left wing conspiracy eh? I ain’t buying it. Dobson has a real problem keeping a grip on his mouth. “Any word thought is a word spoken” and it grows from arrogance.

If it had just been the Christian comment I might be inclined to give him a pass but then recently we have the released E-mail where he trashes Thompson again.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Well up until earlier this week, Dobson’s boy was Newt, who did come to him on bended knee for Dobson’s absolution for Newt’s abomnible personal history.

Dobson had to be crushed when his boy Newt, who couldn’t win a state-wide elction in Georgia, bowed out.

I was specifically referring to a man judging another man’s salvation. Mr. Dobson is in no position to say that about Fred Thompson - Thompson has done nothing to deserve that kind of proclamation. Dobson was way out of place - I used to respect the man - now I have a lot less respect for him.

I don’t think telling a child that what he is doing is wrong - is “judging” him. I do think telling a satin worshipper that he is going to hell is judging, but anyone with half a mind could figure that one out. Some sins are as plain as day - others are hidden in the dark recesses of one’s heart. It’s not for me or anyone else to say what’s there, only the Lord knows that - not Dobson.
