Boy with nut allergy banned from school because he is a 'health and safety risk'
Like anyone with a nut allergy, George Hall-Lambert had always assumed it was the food that caused the problem – not him.
His new school didn't agree. Concerned that none of the staff was trained to cope if the 11-year-old had an allergic reaction, the headmaster banned him – on health and safety grounds.
George, who was diagnosed with a nut allergy at 18 months, carries an emergency adrenaline injection, known as an EpiPen, and wears a medical tag to alert carers to his condition.
When he began at Howden School in East Yorkshire, his mother informed the comprehensive about the allergy.
A file with medical notes was forwarded from his primary.
If the boy went into severe anaphylactic shock it could render him unconscious and he would need assistance using the EpiPen.
He had been at school for only four days when the head summoned his mother for a meeting.
He told her George must go home as no policies were in place to deal with his condition.
Judith Hall-Lambert, who has three other children, said: "Howden School is saying nobody could take charge of his EpiPen because staff don't know how to use it.
"They won't let him back in school until everything has been sorted out and he is classed as safe.
"If he went back now they say he would be a health and safety risk."
George, who was near the top of his class in his SATs tests, is receiving 15 hours a week tuition at home.
But Mrs Hall-Lambert, 37, of Eastrington, near Goole, added: "George is being discriminated against because he has a nut allergy.
"He is a bright kid and this could set back his education."
She dismissed an offer for him to attend the inclusion unit at the school, as it is predominantly for children with behavioural problems.
"George is well-behaved and there is no reason for him to be in that unit.
"He is entitled to a mainstream education like everyone else," she added.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council said arrangements had been made to send him to school full-time, but his mother had decided not to send him.
"The school is following guidance from the local authority and the Government in ensuring that George can access his entitlement to education in a safe environment."
Head Andrew Williams said staff were working towards an acceptable solution.
"My main concern is to ensure that we meet the health and welfare needs of all students in our care."
WHAT????
Eggs are about the most miracle food on the planet, for God's sake! Fast, convenient, resilient to decay, complete little protein package for bright minds and healthy bodies -- to ban them at school is beyond absurd, it's suicidal!
That is EXACTLY my point.
Instead of making ALL of the kids conform to the needs of the ONE, this school chose to side with the majority of the "patrons" of the establishment -- the parents of the other kids in the school.
I knew you would understand.
Conversely, if the “patrons/students/parents” decided to start their own school where peanuts were banned a freedom loving person like yourself would have no objection.
The peanut lover is free to take their business elsewhere. They can go to a school that serves peanut omelettes for breakfast, peanut casserole for lunch and all the desks are made of edible peanuts.
Just like nobody is forcing a private bar owner to allow smoking if his customers are annoyed by it. Those customers would be free to walk across the street to the smokey bar that caters to them.
What were we disagreeing about again? I forgot.
Lactose intolerance is natural side effect of God's plan or Evolution, if you're the enlightened sort. Milk allergy generally occurs later in life.
Any allergy can occur at any time in one's life. I developed an allergy to Aspirin and NSAIDS at some time after my 33 1/2 year. 2 weeks prior to my anaphylactic reaction to Indomethacin, I took two aspirin without any problem.
My personal hypothesis regarding the dramatic increase in peanut allergy is a direct result of Soy madness. In the past 30 years from baby formula to "modified protein", soybeans have become an inescapable ingredient in food we all eat. Peanuts aren't nuts, they are legumes, as are soybeans. The protein is quite large and difficult to digest for human infants to digest (vegetable cells have cell walls and are resistant to destruction by weak digestive fluids) and triggers IgE response = allergy.
Finally, let be as cold and cavalier as many of those who have fortunately escaped the wrath of any medical condition, perhaps you would not be as dismissive if the little ones in your care developed such a condition.
My daughter is a PB&J lover. She cant even take it to school now unless she wants to sit apart from the other kids. What is wrong with this picture?

No school to go to everyday? Now there are going to be a lot of students suffering from peanut “allergies.”
I tell my daughter she is no longer allowed to enjoy her favorite lunch because it isnt PC.
Where will it stop? I am not trying to be mean but when did an entire school body of children have to change for one?
When my son was in grade school starting in kindergarten he had a restricted diet. When they had special days with treats, I supplied the teacher with the appropriate food for him. I would have never expected the whole class to accommadate him.
I am not sure what the answer is to this....there has to be a better way than all or nothing.
The social engineers got the smokers, why not the fat kids? Do you want the chilruns to end up like Re-run from "What's Happening"? It's all for the greater good Comrade Donna. Get on the bandwagon.

Good for you! That's a manly trait and your manly trait of protecting your offspring is equally admirable. Do what you can to protect your child. Don't expect everyone else to protect her as well.

People who don't smoke obviously don't care about the Chilrun. We're doing our part by buying cigarettes to give the chilruns healthcare.

Second of all, my daughter is not allowed to leave the house or talk to boys until she is at least 45...problem solved.
My son can do whatever he wants with somebody else’s daughter.:-)
And when he shows up at my door to take out my daughter he will be met by either mommy or daddy cleaning or loading a firearm :-)
Nothing more than the logical consequence of a minority of parents demanding thousands of other families and children change their behavior to accommodate their child’s problem.
