Editor,
We wish to respond to the recent incident involving the desecration of the Mexican national flag that was raised Friday on the south side of Scholes Hall.
The incident is still being investigated, but what we do know at this point is that after a ceremony celebrating the Mexican independence day - Dieciseis de Septiembre - the flag that was raised during the celebration was subsequently taken down and, as we understand it, ripped to shreds.
We understand that a suspect has been apprehended by the police, but the investigation is still ongoing at this time. We want it to be understood that the flag desecration is abhorrent to President David Schmidly and everyone in the administration.
In light of incidents that have taken place in the past several days involving students being targeted because of their race or nationality, we want it to be known that UNM will not tolerate acts of racism and xenophobia. These incidents will be answered with disciplinary and/or legal action against the responsible individuals. The person who perpetrated this despicable act will answer for it.
We wish to offer apologies on behalf of UNM to the Mexican Consul to New Mexico, Juan Manuel Solano; to the Mexican Student Association; to all Mexican nationals who have been affected by this deplorable act; and to anyone else who has been adversely affected by this incident. Please know we are doing everything in our power to make sure this act will be sternly
addressed.

I don't know.
From my experience the LEO's are heavily lopsided to the CONSERVERATIVE mindset.
It really all depends upon who we are kowtowing to at the time...
Kudos FRiend! I’m a UNM alum from the days when having Edward Abbey on campus was our biggest excitement. I applaud your action and wish to express my shame at the UNM President’s comments. They are disgraceful and anti-American. He should be replaced by someone who’s read the U.S. Constitution.
We are loosing our country. Not to the illegals, but through the petty actions of bureaucrats.
bttt
For Gods sake, New Mexico was part of Mexico at one time, he said. Theres tremendous ties, and we have a large population of Hispanics that live in our state and many of them have relatives and connections to Mexico.
What Mr Schmidly doesn’t understand, or just plain ignores is the fact that the majority of New Mexico’s native Hispanic population refuses to call themselves Mexican Americans. You just might get your a$$ kicked for suggesting that we are Mexican American.
Our culture is the remnants of Spanish colonial culture, heavily influenced by the Pueblo Indian culture. There is no love lost between hispanic New Mexicans and Mexico. Once Mexico gained independance from Spain, she left New Mexicans to fend for themselves against Apache, Navajo and Commanche raiding parties. There was little to no resistance when the US invaded New Mexico, in fact there was massive collaboration with US troops.
Hispanic New Mexicans have a long history of military service to this great country, many have paid the ultimate sacrifice. There is a beautifull testament to this at Angel Fire where the New Mexico Viet Nam Memorial is located.
The other thing this moron university president fails to aknowledge is the fact that there is great resentment and tension between the native hispanic population and the illegal Mexican nationals. I witnessed this first hand when I went home for Labor Day weekend. Neither side likes the other very much, and things could boil over soon.
See my post at 126.
Welcome aboard. You did the right thing, of course if you had ripped down the American Flag you would be a hero to these folks. If they love their 3rd world hellhole of a homeland so much, why don’t they go back?
BTTT
Its inexcusable to desecrate a flag, he said. Im not going to be very pleasant to deal with on this issue.
What makes the situation worse is that it was a Mexican flag, Schmidly said.
For Gods sake, New Mexico was part of Mexico at one time, he said. Theres tremendous ties, and we have a large population of Hispanics that live in our state and many of them have relatives and connections to Mexico.
This a-hole could give Columbia's Bollinger a run-for-the-money!
If you want on or off the NM Ping list, please FReepmail me.
bcsco, for your ping list.
With all due respect Ms. Martinez-Purson, the Hispanic community is several miles to your South, across the border. You are residing in an American community.
Get used to it....or go to the Hispanic community.
The “University Near Mom” has been a toilet of PC oppression for some time now, and as you can see, it has been infiltrated by La Raza. Considering the demographics in New Mexico, that’s shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

Welcome, Peter, you did good!

I wonder if University President Schmidly would have the same attitude about flying the Confederate Flag in any Southern State? I guess the Alamo and Golidad were justified killings to him.
Way to go, Peter. You have found a home here. Thanks for your service to our country, and for your continuing service to our country in this episode.
