MARIAZELL, Austria (AFP) Pope Benedict XVI blasted Europeans for being selfish and not having enough children, in a sermon on Saturday at the 850-year-old pilgrimage site of Mariazell in Austria.
"Europe has become child-poor. We want everything for ourselves and place little trust in the future," the pope told a crowd of faithful from his canopied area at an open-air mass that took place under heavy rain.
But Benedict held out hope, saying: "The earth will be deprived of a future only when the forces of the human heart and of reason illuminated by the heart are extinguished . . . Where God is, there is the future."
The pontiff had slammed abortion upon arriving in Austria Friday as the "very opposite" of human rights.
"The fundamental human right, the presupposition of every other right, is the right to life itself," he told members of the government and the diplomatic corps at the Hofburg, the seat of the Austrian presidency in Vienna.
The pope also warned at the mass Saturday that science must be used for good if man is not to be threatened with destruction.

His is a different vocation. For those of us whose vocation is marriage, we have an obligation to reproduce.
I already know what it means and if you read just the first paragraph note it does not state or it states AND when refering to Clerical Celbacy as is the case here.

Thank you, sir, for your sensible comments.
I don't think you do, because you just said:
no one can say for a fact he has been celibate his whole life
A priest can be celibate and also be previously married or have had a history of sex outside of marriage. It has nothing to do with his "whole life". Only his clerical life. And since he has taken his vows, and has had no diciplinary issues involving those vows, I see no reason to believe otherwise.

What?
The level does, indeed sink. But! Think of it, you and Salvation and all the others who still proclaim truth are truly merciful. Spiritual works of mercy. And the hard part hasn’t even begun yet. The peace of the Lord...V’s wife.
Clerical celibacy is the practice of various religious traditions in which clergy, monastics and those (of either sex) in religious orders adopt a celibate life, refraining from marriage and sexual relationships, including masturbation and "impure thoughts" (such as sexual visualisation and fantasies). Clerical celibacy is practiced mainly by Roman Catholic priests and Eastern and Oriental Orthodox bishops. It is also practiced sometimes by Anglo-Catholic priests.
I read it. No where does it say anything about living your "whole life" as you said earlier, celibate. The pope has taken vows of celibacy, all evidence points to the fact he has kept those vows, so unless you have evidence to the contrary, you have no basis to claim otherwise.
Do you get upset when the left says all soldiers in Iraq are out of control killers? You must not, because, after all, you can't prove they aren't, can you?
True, the pope is not God; but in this case, he knows God’s rules and he teaches them. I am speaking of the moral law, which is not the pope’s invention, but God’s.
Just take it from the time he took his vows then. I realize that was an error on my part to say his whole life but that will not change my stance on the remainder. Neither you nor I and anyone other then the pope himself knows the real truth and all one has to do is look at the history of priests. They are all human and all subject to making mistakes only in this case they would be sins.
I would like to think he is celibate but there is no way that I would make a foolish statement of fact as was done from the get go when it was stated he was celibate without any proof to back it up.
So you would agree with the lefties who claim every serviceman in Iraq is a crazed murderer? I mean, we do have evidence that a few did commit heinous crimes, and we really can't prove that they aren't.....
Right?
So I guess I can accuse you of being a pedophile. Can you prove you aren't?
What would you accept as "proof" that the pope was celibate?
(I can't believe I wrote that sentence)
“Many people do not have enough energy to ever reproduce, and some have such limited energy that they cannot even have sex without serious consequences to their health. Reproduction has strong effects to both females, and it is now being learned, males.”
Sorry, I just don’t see this. I know that some people are just too tired any given night, but serious consequences to their health if they have sex? Don’t believe it.
“More and more couples are abandoning sex entirely after having children.”
I don’t doubt that many people have less sex after children for many reasons, but no sex? Not among folks I know.
“This is why I say it is such a critical issue that women, especially, are permitted to use their energy in child rearing, instead of to raise national productivity for free, their extra income being taxed away.”
Eh?
It’s true. Between birth control, abortion, and recognition of homosexual relationships, Western society is driving itself to extinction. Only the U.S. and Israel are barely meeting replacement level. The third world and Muslims are reproducing at a high level, and they will fill the void.
My grandmother was from a middle class family, one of twenty-three children (my great-grandmother had to have been in near state of perpetual pregnancy), and each child had a separate bedroom in the house. That was before the federal income tax.
Yes. I do deny that.
I’m also wondering which specific passages of the Bible describe the Pope’s job description to not have any kids.

Actually I wan’t mixing any issues. I was asking how many kids the Pope has. I’m pretty sure the answer is zero.
