NYT Asks: Where Are All the Gay Superheroes?
NewsBusters.org ^ | 9/7/2007 | Clay Waters

On Monday, New York Times Arts writer George Gene Gustines profiled gay novelist Perry Moore, a fervent supporter of gay rights -- for fictional comic book characters.

"Novelist's Superhero Is Out to Right Wrongs" began:

"Perry Moore has the sinewy physique and golden looks of a California surfer, but get him talking about comics, and he can out-geek the biggest fanatic. He also has the fervor of an activist when discussing the dearth -- and occasional shoddy treatment -- of gay superheroes in mainstream comic books."

Now there's a vital cause we can all rally behind!

"It is an issue close to the heart of Mr. Moore, who is gay, and he has funneled his passion into a young-adult novel. 'Hero,' published in hardback last week by Hyperion Teen, tells the story of Thom Creed, coping not only with high school, sexual orientation and a strained home life, but also with his own budding superpowers. In telling Thom's story, Mr. Moore, like some of the costumed champions he admires, hopes to right some wrongs.

"'My publisher did not shy away from my mission,' he said during a recent interview near his home in Greenwich Village. That mission is a multipart endeavor to show gay superheroes in a positive light, to learn from his experiences with his father and to give younger readers a potential role model in Thom."

Because liberal moralizing is what comic book readers are looking for.

They seem to think kids want to watch the adventures of the “Fudge Packin’ Rump Rangers”.

I guess rescuing the fair damsel in distress is less of a priority...

Do they mean gay or the corrupted form of gay which means queer?
Are they asking more queers to act as fantasy super heroes?
Do they want a superhero to act like a queer?

SNL’s featured ‘gay super hero’s’ in animation for years now as I recall.

Ever seen Drawn Together?

Yeah, because when Northstar of Alpha Flight came out as gay, that book simply SHOT up in sales in popularity, right? (Issue #106.)

Wrong: the book was canceled two years later.

Gee - maybe 98% kids don’t want their superheroes to be Captain Gloryhole?

First off...lets get some facts straight here.

Robin is gay....period. For those who are upset...this is why Batman eventually dumped the sidekick and went off on his own.

Second...Hawkman, who is married to Hawkgirl...was cheating on her and should have resigned from the Justice League...simply my humble opinion.

Aquaman...played Wonder Woman to the hilt....and simply toyed with her. He never intended to be serious and was a loser.

The Flash....married...but he refused to spend quality time with the wife...and should have left Capital City and joined the Park Service crowd.

Supergirl....just couldn’t find a stable guy...which makes you wonder if she had too lofty of goals for guys.

Superman....a straight guy who simply wanted a GF who wasn’t a loser or wasting time chatting constantly about his superpowers.

Green Lantern....a real loser....who should have been tossed out of the Justice League period.

Martian Manhunter...is the question mark. He might be gay. He might be bi. He might be some Martian dude who can’t do it anyway....or maybe they do with only other Martians...who knows. I think he should have been taken at first opportunity back to Mars by Superman and just dumped off...as a illegal alien.
