Thrown off plane for outfit deemed too skimpy

It doesn’t take much to get thrown off an airplane these days, as Kyla Ebbert found out when a Southwest Airlines employee told her she was too bare for the air. Two months later, she’s still trying to figure out what was wrong with her outfit.

In an exclusive appearance Friday on TODAY, Ebbert modeled the outfit she says she wore on the flight in question. It consisted of a snug-fitting white top with a scoop neck that stopped just short of showing cleavage.

Over the shirt was a green sweater that buttoned underneath her bosom. It was finished with high-heeled sandals and a white denim mini-skirt with a fashionably frayed hem.

It was a lot more clothing than the 23-year-old college student wears on her job as a Hooters waitress. Her mother, Michele Ebbert, said she would have told her daughter if the outfit was inappropriate.

“But her outfit is fine, Michele Ebbert told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer. “She looks like every other college girl in San Diego.”

Not according to a Southwest employee identified only as “Keith,” who approached Ebbert after she had taken her seat on the plane and was listening to the flight attendants go through their pre-departure routine.

“He told me, ‘I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to take a later flight. You’re dressed inappropriately. This is a family airline. You’re dressed too provocative to fly on this flight,’ ” she told Lauer.

“I said, ‘What part of it, the shirt, the skirt? Which part?’ “ Ebbert continued, recounting her conversation with Keith about her outfit. “And he said, ‘The whole thing.’“ I said, ‘I didn’t bring any luggage with me. I don’t have anything to change into. What can I do to make sure I can get onto that flight?’ ...”

You know....if airlines would just their dang job and fly on schedule...I might let them get away with this. I flew this summer...and got stuck in JFK (they wanted me to stay 48 hours in NY City before they could get me out of the city....in July). I have very little respect for the airlines presently. I’ve seen so many examples this year of missed flights and lost luggage with friends and associates....that I’m not really willing to hear about cleavage or family airlines. I want an airline working hard to get me up safely and down safely....on time.

So, everyone else (who has an issue with it) needs to just suck it up while the young woman dresses as she pleases? Yes, the problem is always those nasty prudes who just don’t respect a fine young thing!

Hey, I like the way women look. I even enjoy scantily clad ones. I just don’t think everything is appropriate in public. Had the woman dressed even a bit more conservatively (please note that skirt was likely worn much differently on the plane), it wouldn’t have been an issue. In other words, she created the issue, and her mode of dress shows disrespect for her fellow travelers. You probably don’t agree, but in the public sphere, people should tend to more conservative dress.

Why am I making a bid deal out of this? Because it’s representative of a society that’s teetering out of control. Everyone is so concerned about their “rights” and “freedoms,” and to h*** with everyone else. This is NOT what the founders intended when they spoke of individual liberty.

Did I mention I’m a multi-billionaire brain-surgeon who tinkers in atomic energy research, and spend my spare time serving as the Bishop of a huge church?

Don't listen to him, Fawn! Laz is prone to wild exaggeration (unless you consider 2000 parishers "huge.")

gdani:

1) Screaming infants
2) People who weigh over 250 lbs whose lard spills over to my side of the seat

They are more of a pain to me than this girl.

I have to agree with you there. I always seem to be the unfortunate schmuck who gets stuck with a center seat and high body mass occupants on both sides.

If a man got on with his business showing, for some reason or other, he would be asked to leave, probably arrested. If a woman wears a skirt that is so short her underware et al shows, is it not just as bad? Sure, it’s her right to wear what she likes. It’s their right to refuse service if they deem her attire inappropriate for family viewing.

Nothing any more then the girls from “Friends of Fox” morning show seem to wear these days. If I want to see chicken legs, I’ll buy KFC.

I was thinking along the same lines. Yeah, she looks kinda hot because of the way she’s dressed.

But if she was wearing the standard jeans and shirt, she’d look like road kill.

Better than average road kill, but road kill nonetheless.

Pointless tangent:
I went into the Saks (sp?) 5th Ave clearance store, and browsed for something nice for m'lady. Stumbled across a short denim skirt covered in metal washers - and marked down from a list price of $2500.00. Ack! AFAIK it's still on the rack marked no higher than $50.

Talk about "somebody laughing and making all kinds of money"... they wouldn't list it at that if someone wasn't going to pay it...

Actually, this lady ended up not being thrown off, so the headline is misleading.

I’m disappointed that no one stepped forward and offered to change seats with the offended person sitting next to her. I would have......(I would have even begged)

The Southwest employee was almost certainly acting in response to a complaint or complaints.

Absolutely.

Have you ever complained to them? If not, how is the airline to know?

I've flown Southwest -- sorry, but they are the last folks to be lecturing on *appropriate clothing for plane flight.*

Exactly. The male flight attendants wear shorts, for crying out loud.

1970s: Southwest Airlines experiences a dramatic jump in ticket sales when its flight attendants start wearing white go-go boots and hot pants.

And now they've turned into a bunch of prudes.
