Is a salmon born in a hatchery a different species from the same salmon born in the wild?
It is hard to believe, but recent Federal court rulings are claiming that otherwise genetically identical fish are separate species, forcing an appeal being announced recently to the 9th Circuit Court.

These decisions will dramatically affect a lot of people living in the Pacific Northwest. Protecting the salmon will make water much more difficult to obtain, and, without irrigation permits, many farmers and ranchers will have to stop watering their crops and livestock. Large areas of private property will have to be set aside for any species listed as threatened or endangered. The commercial and recreational fishing industries in the Northwest, which generate more than $2 billion annually, will also be affected.
Promoting the survival of salmon is a worthy goal, but does it really matter if a fishs ancestors are from a hatchery or are naturally spawned? As it is, many so-called "wild" or naturally spawned salmon were all but gone and brought back through the use of hatcheries. Given that hatcheries have been around for over a hundred years, it's likely that all naturally spawned salmon have at least some hatchery-spawned ancestors....

This has already happened in parts of Washington and Oregon. Farmers put out of business because of the need for water for the fish. It goes on in Colorado also. Just ask some of the ranchers that have had their wells shut down. Some of those wells are over a 100 years old.
So people born in hospitals are a different species than those born in straw huts in Africa?.................

As with all legislation based on the New Deal "substantial effects" doctrine, there never was any "control".
To quote Clarence Thomas - "The substantial effects test is no test at all. It is a blank check."
How can the federal government shut down a well on private property?.....
No need to take water from the salmon rivers; it can easily be obtained by (1) building a huge nuke power plant and (2) using the power to desalinate sea water.
Wouldn’t THAT make liberal heads spin!
They could always buy ‘salmon offsets’.
Yeah, well, Former Congressman Richard Pombo of Tracy, CA tried to revise it and tweak it toward a little commonsense and the Dems targeted him during the ‘06 Repub bashing election and got him voted off the island!!!
Many people think that these fish farms are something new because they simply don't know the history.
“How can the federal government shut down a well on private property?.....”
Just who do you think owns your property?
Me (as long as I pay my taxes) and the mortgage holder (as long as I pay my monthly payments).............
Some will hold that you don’t own the land but only own the rights to it.
Ok so your mortgage holder is allowing you to pay big bucks so that you can pay taxes on your property for the rest of your life. Sounds to me like the government only rents you the property and the mortgage holder charges you a lot of interest on the money you borrowed from them to pay the last “Owner” for the privilege of renting it from the government.
All land belongs to the Crown. But the Crown cannot eat land.......
The total of my mortgage payments will be less than what the property is worth now...........
This is nuttier than one might imagine. The hatcheries spawn them then let then free. They go out to sea for years and eventually come back to where they were born. I can’t see where they differ from wild salmon. Are they tattooed by the hatchery?
