ELMWOOD PARK -- A 27-year-old native Colombian on Monday became the first undocumented resident to be reported to immigration officials by borough police under a new state directive.
The arrest of Sabian Velasco, of Third Street, came five days after state Attorney General Anne Milgram said local police must now notify the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of all arrests of illegal immigrants.
Velasco was arrested around 1:30 p.m. after he chased people inside his house with a 3-foot machete, said police Sgt. Bryan DiPasquale.
DiPasquale described the victims as "in their 40s and familiar with [Velasco]."
"He didn't cut anybody -- he was chasing them," the sergeant said. "We're not sure what the chasing was about."
Velasco, who is unemployed, has been in the U.S. for at least the last five years, DiPasquale said. His name didn't show up in official residential searches and that he could not prove he was a legal resident, he said.
"His family ultimately told us that he's an illegal immigrant," DiPasquale said.
Under Milgram's directive, police are prohibited from inquiring about the immigration status of crime victims and witnesses.
DiPasquale said Velasco's case has been handled similarly to other arrests, "except we had to call ICE and notify them."

Just chasing the people with a 3-foot machete that Americans wouldn't chase with a 3-foot machete.
How do you deport 12 million illegals?
One at a time. ;)
Perhaps some good will come from the horrible, senseless triple homicide perpetrated in Newark by illegal aliens.
Ok, I will give those brilliant new Jersey cops a little hint.
If he is illegal its a good bet that the rest of the family is as well. Dumb cops!
A formally once nice neighborhood no doubt.
He’s been here for 5 years, he’s unemployed (in any legal employment, anyway)-any guesses as to how he lives? Welfare, dope dealing, carjacking?
Mexico has evidently moved from begging for American largess to demanding it.
Regards

DUH Calling Judge Robert Moon...
This guy is a flight risk ...he needs a $1,000,000 bond..
Sounds like we should line up some busses. If the Jersey AG has the you know what to follow thru as do the coppers, we may need them soon. :) :)

Yes, but the cops can't touch the rest of the family. You silly thing, don'cha know it's only illegal to cross the border itself, it's not illegal to be here undocumented.
And she'll have diplomatic immunity as well. Welcome to the United States of Mexico.
Local cops: "yeah we got an illegal here."
FED's: "what did he do?"
Local cops: "he menaced some family members with a machete."
FED's: "it was family and no one was hurt? sorry, we don't want him. but thanks for the call."
the fed's will put this one in the good 'ole round file.
