The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.

U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.

If we had to have a revolution, would the neighbors with caches willingly lend some guns to those with none?

I wonder how much of that count is institutionally or governmentally, rather than privately, owned.

The first thing Hitler did to the Jews was take away their firearms. After that it was a piece of cake. All downhill.

And yet the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was surprisingly effective, with a bare handful of pistols and miscellaneous old weapons of various kinds, many homemade. They managed to hold out against well-armed German troops for an entire month. All that was required was the will. Which the Jews found after news linked that Treblinka was a killing center. Too bad they didn't start a whole lot sooner.

There’s others who pick up some slack, too! I agree, lets make it a nice even 100.

.9 guns per capita...I guess I’m an over achiever.

Maybe, but what's the per capita for your household? Since I live alone I'm at 10X the national average. If I include my wife, who does live with me in the summer and whenever else she can, it's only 5X. If I include the two great nieces who live with us/her, it's 2.5X. Adding in our grown daughters, well, I think their husbands have to count them now. One has at least 3 firearms I know of, the other has none. He's from New Jersey, but we're working on him. I bought one gun, Ruger 22/45, just to let him shoot it, and he has.

Isn’t National Buy A Gun Day coming up here pretty quick?

“Only about 12 percent of civilian weapons are thought to be registered with authorities.” - That’s 12% of 875 million too many!

The article stated that there are 90 guns per 100 people in the U.S. The goal should be 100 guns per 100 people....

Well, you can never have too many of course, but those 10 are underage juveniles, or in prison. Eliminate those and others who wouldn't use a gun if their own life depended on it, and I'll bet there is way more than 1 gun per person, maybe as many as 1.5.

It’s time for existing gun laws to be enforced. It is obvious that law abiding gun owners are the majority. And no new gun laws are necessary.

Actually, it's time for almost all gun laws to be repealed. "Shall not be infringed is pretty strong language.

Are these figures drawn up from gun sales? From gun stores and gun shows and flea markets?

I suspect they are from manufacturers, exporters and importers, plus an estimate of how many have turned to scrap metal. No need to worry the retail end of things, there is no "sink" for guns, other than the collectors and gun nuts among us of course. They all eventually end up either exported or in the hands of the populace. (Neglecting military and police, but those are known factors as well).

Before long, 99% of the ammo here will be dipped in pig blood before loading. Pass it on.

yep! How's the furniture on yours?

Holding up just fine and I use a 405gr bullet out of it. 10 shot buffalo rifle is what I call it.
