Giuliani? Thompson? No President Will Lead a Moral Revival

By Dan Calabrese

August 20, 2007

A friend recently indicated his strong preference for Fred Thompson over Rudy Giuliani in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. The issue, he said, is morality. Giuliani’s past marital infidelity, fractured relationships with his children and support for abortion rights and gay rights call his moral judgment into question.

That, say this friend and many other social conservatives, is not the kind of man we want to elect to lead a moral nation.

Any defense of Giuliani on these points can wait for another day. But a look at statistical indicators of Americans’ morality over the past 30 years shows an interesting lack of correlation between moral trends and the moral character of the person sitting in the White House.

The President is NOT a moral leader. I don't look to politicians for moral leadership. People who want to do that should look to their clergy.

The next President can do more to revive morals in this country than any President in modern history. Changing the makeup of the Supreme Court to stop the judicial tyranny of liberal activist judges will help to achieve that. It will take a generation to become evident, but it will happen.

The inability of some to see beyond the ‘here and now’ always amazes me. If it isn’t going to happen next Tuesday, it’s not going to make a difference what anyone does. That’s just silly.

Well I do. I don't want my leader to be immoral. Cheating on people you have taken a vow to be faithful to shows me that you wouldn't hesitate to cheat on people who have elected you. I want my leaders to have strong moral character.

Let the Lord use us to reach others on his behalf. That is what sparks a moral revival. Christ. Every Christian should reach out in love . . .

"The President is NOT a moral leader."

True, but he sure sets the tone by example.

I’m looking for the next President to lead in the War on Islamists, provide a plan for energy needs for the 21st century, lead on comprehensive tort reform, and propose a coherent plan for social security and immigration. Morality is up to each and every citizen.

Fred T to evangelicals:

“I chased a lot of women, and a lot of women chased me,” Thompson told Republican congressmen earlier this year. “And those that chased me tended to catch me.”

Nice family values.

I totally agree with you. Clinton made oral sex ‘not sex’. Look at the stats of todays teens.

The standard has to be higher for POTUS. At least FDT had a marriage that didn’t work and they split on good terms. His ex is even willing to campaign for him when he gets in.

He wasn’t married at the time. No broken vows.

We need to not just get a victory in 2008, but we need to look beyond Bush and focus on the long term vision of the Conservative movement. Each of the candidates running have good attributes, and maybe just maybe a few of them have what it takes to beat Hillary, but where will they take the party?

Is this just about beating Hillary? Yea, we get some sweet revenge, but we could also get four years of more of the same, politics as usual in Washington D.C. . Or is this about a rediscovery of our values and our common sense as a Nation, and the resurgence of national pride? We need the President to be the “Nations President” once again.

It’s been written not long after the mess in Florida with the hanging chads, that to half the Nation, President Bush was their President, but to the other half he was not President at all. We can as Americans no longer afford to have that sort of a divide between our people.
Ronald Reagan said he left the entertainment world for politics because he wanted to protect something precious. Well the office of President is something precious and the respect for it should be preserved. The President once again needs to be “Our President”, weather you voted for him or not. Out of all the potential presidential candidates, Fred Thompson is the one that can unite us and move us forward to better things.

In President Reagan’s Farewell Address he said, “I wasn’t a great communicator, but I communicated great things.” Fred Thompson is a communicator of great things and I am honored to be behind him.

Yes well, there is no middle ground unfortunately. One is either a moral leader or an immoral leader. Granted, the moral standards in elected officials will always be determined by the aggregate of the total electorate, so the relative morality of our leaders doesn't so much effect that of the nation as it is a reflection of the nation.

This friend. Interesting Source. Calabrese likely still has conversations with the same imaginary friend he had when he was 4 years old. Moonbats!

Another propaganda ploy, trying to use the morality of conservatives against them in order to create disunity among them.

The truth is that we do have a candidate who fits the presidential shoes very well.

Its not Fahred, nor Rooty Tootsie.

His name is Duncan Hunter. If you have not heard of him, visit his web page.

Go Duncan Hunter!

Much to the chagrin of the Democrap Party, the issue is not morality. The issue is national security in relation to Iraq, and in relation to illegal aliens.

Oh they really want it to be morality though! They wish!

Oh dear god! He dated when he was single! The horror!

You Romulans are really becoming broken records on this. Is there anything interesting or of substance you can come up with? This line of attack is every bit as lame as certain people attacking Mitt ever the hotel PPV-porn non-scandal (which I vigorously defended him over, even though he isn't my guy).
