Hurricane Dean Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | August 19, 2007 | NOAA/NWS

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:52:51 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Dean is moving west-northwest through the Caribbean Sea. The current NHC forecast track indicates Dean's powerful center core will pass just south of the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, and should skirt Jamaica's southern shoreline. The storm maintained strong Category 4 wind status through the night during an eyewall replacement cycle. However, the minimum pressure supports Category 5, and additional strengthening of winds is likely.

Tourists in Jamaica crowded airports Saturday to leave the island nation. Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller addressed the Jamaican people, asking that everyone put aside their political differences and work together in advance of the imminent storm preceding Jamaica's general election scheduled for August 27. PM Miller announced that the Jamaican power grid and water would likely be shut down early Sunday morning in advance of the storm, and strongly urged citizens to seek shelter.

The United States and Barbados have pledged hurricane relief supplies and support to Jamaica as needed. No word yet from the United Nations...

The sad reality of the TS and hurricanes is we normally rely on them to replenish our water supply. Suppose it will work for the rest of the county too.

Any TX Freepers if you do not have what you need to bugout or bunker down do not wait get it now.

Gas was in short supply at some of the local stations in the area too. The ATM at the bank near me was empty by 3:00 pm yesterday. I had to drive into Houston to get cash.

The difference in this case is the eye of the storm visible and rotating on radar. Those are sustained winds at 40 mph, higher gusts.

Well, the rain normally is not that bad. The remnants sometimes don’t really bring anything. Even when they do, the flooding is not that bad since the rain does not come as fast as if you were on the coast.

I am glad for the rain here...actually beat down the 100 degree temps.

Oklahoma is getting soaked though!

I don’t have much confidence in the Jamaica radar site, especially if they shut down the power grid as mentioned by the Jamaican PM last night. That site is likely overloaded too due to onlookers around the world.

40 mph?

This is the plains...We have 40 mph winds all the time.

Not even close to a big deal.

The rain is unusual, however....quite a lot of rain down in OK. HEre in Ks, we are missing most of it.

All the talk about buoys got me to take a look at the one guarding my neck of the woods.

Buoy 41002, a NOMAD, 250 NM east of Charleston, SC was “recovered and turned off”. It will be replaced when it can be worked into the schedule.

So, of the four buoys I was interested in this morning three are not working.

I was in Friendswood for Claudette.

I will never forget a couple of calls we got over night. One, about 2 am from a neighbor that we should go out in the downpour to removed boards from our fences because the water was falling so hard that our yards were becoming swimming pools. The next one from my sister around 4 am saying that they were airlifting people off the roofs of their condos not a mile away from us.

We rode up and down parts of FM 518 in a friend's flat bottom boat just so we could try to get in to work in Clear Lake City.
