I always thought the Devil’s Island thing was a good idea.

““Californicate is smart. They know many families will move to be with their loved ones. They have to be near their loved ones as they know they were wrongly convicted.”

Your theory sounds frighteningly plausible. Unfortunately. And you are dead right about the economic impact on the area.”

Oh, in order to avoid trampling on prisoners “rights” they are only sending those who committed crimes in California and either volunteered to be transferred out of the state(only about 200 did so) or were illegal immigrants who stated that they had no family ties in California. If they’re boomeranged, er deported, after release, when they come back to the US they’ll most likely go back to the Southwest unless some undisclosed family members move to Mississippi/Arizona.

Meanwhile the MS prisons only cost California ~$60/inmate/day while the CA ones cost ~$90. Some inmates are also being sent to Arizona(I’d love it if they could send them to Sheriff Arpaio). California decided to do this partially because some federal judges have been making noises about a prison population cap and ordering early releases because CA is about 80,000 prisoners over capacity. The biggest complainer in this whole thing is the CA correctional officers union.

Are there any geniuses in Mississippi?

Unfortunately, Jerry Clower died back in 1998...

Why I thought the prisoners wanted to be in jail. Of course it’s against their will.

Mr. Clower was THE original Southern comedic genius whom Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy must thank for breaking that ground.

“Girls, if you have a problem with beaus pawing on you just place a Bible on the seat between you. You’ll be amazed at how much trouble they’ll have trying to get to you over Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.”

"Now you see this brand new razor, I had it sharpened just today.
An' I'm passin' it amongst you with a set of my rules you must follow as you play.
Keep yo' big bony hands on the table while you dealin' please,
An' don't be slippin' any of them wild ones down in between yo' knees.
When you bet, let me see them reds and blues, I don't like it when you're shy,
If you run out o' gas, go out and get pumped up, I'll be here by and by.
'Cause we ain't playin' this here game accordin' to that Hoyle feller, no sir, we playin' this here game accordin' to ME!"

LOL! Even the saints among us have had their periods of challenges. I trust the patched and stained far more than those who pretend to be lily-white all their lives.

Blessings and sincere good fortune to you and yours.

Maybe they are trying to break up the prison gangs out there.

Mara Salvatrucha, the MS-13 gang, formed here in California and it has spread across the US and back into Central America- we have a better record of exporting gangs than breaking them up.

it seems california does not want to spend money on anything as inconvenient as power plants either (or will not allow them to be built by private industry)

i hate that innocent people (that worked for enron) were harmed by enron, but can’t muster a tear for the high bills they had

>>Since the prison is a private corporation, I wonder if there is any state oversight of those decisions? I know they have to comply with Department of Corrections requirements but I don’t know if that includes anything about where the prisoners come from.<<

I’ve got concerns about private prisons to start with - generally I like privatization but giving law enforcement over to corporations seems like it would reduce oversight.

I agree with you. Let me expand on those oversight concerns.

First, we are ceding our prisons over to the lowest bidder. I don’t like that any better than having everything from ammo to the shuttle made by the lowest bidder. I know it’s better than counting on the gubmint to do it. I just hope there’s a lot of quality control oversight.

These for-profit corporations have to be concerned about making a profit. When they underbid a project or their costs start increasing and they start to cut corners, where are they cutting? I’m a great deal more concerned about security shortfalls than how well they coddle prisoners. However, the conditions inside can result in problems that turn into security issues. Again, it comes down to oversight.... and security.

On first read, I took it to be against the will of the CA corrections officials, who would have rather had more unionized state corrections employees, that would have been necessary had these folks been incarcerated in CA.

The poor of Missippi are being paid to allow the illeagals to be warehoused in their state. it is a win win situation for California and Missippi.
