Financial pressures force Snow departure

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.

He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."

The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.

The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.

Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.

"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."

Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.

I have to say that does not ring true. I say that even as I like and respect Tony Snow. But if this story quotes him acurately and not out of context, I think Tony just lied to us about his main motivation to leave.

I liked him better as a talk show host. At least i felt like his opinions were his own.

I saw him on TV the other day for the first time after a while. He looked so old now, compared to when he was still with FNC.

I’m sad that Tony will not endure until the end of Bush’s presidency. Seems that salary and benefits would tie him over since he knew coming in what the package was. But, things change with all of us so new directions have to be taken.

Maybe he can run for VP!!

I do wish him a complete recovery from his cancer.

Tony is too honest for there not to be some accuracy in what he is saying... but he knew the salary and he knows the long term earning potential that comes from being deep inside the White House - Pat Buchanan has ridden a speech writing gig in the Nixon White House for almost 40 years.

So it just doesn’t feel like the truth that he is leaving over the reduced salary for one year.

I think his illness has taken a toll on his youthful appearance.

The man has cancer and is undergoing expensive chemotherapy treatments. Plus, with three kids to feed, $168,000 per year doesn't go that far in the DC area.

Maybe you should give Tony a break?

Does anybody on earth have better medical insurance than high ranking U.S. officials?

He was rumored to be earning a 7 figure paycheck from Fox and his old radio program.

That said, the Dems. will spin this as how he’s saying he can’t by on $168,000 a year, and what about children in poverty, yadda yadda.

I think his eldest is a sophomore in high school the other two might be in their teens now.

If he is leaving for medical reasons, he might not want to have it speculated by the media that he is leaving to spend the rest of the time he has left with his family.
