That could be half or maybe 1/3 of what he usually makes. Its all relative. If you got cancer and lost half or more of you current salary, how hard would it be on you. If you make 3 or 4 hundred thousand a year your lifestyle, mortgage, car payments, property payments and the like would be much more than if you made 170,000. Either sell and move to live within your means knowing your job only has a year or so left, or go back to your old job.

I believe they are college age children. And while $168,000 sounds like a lot to most of us, in Washington DC, especially if that means maintaining a temporary home in DC along with your permanent residence elsewhere, that is a middle-class wage. Whatever your level of income is, it probably sounds like a lot, too, to someone who makes considerably less.
