Financial pressures force Snow departure

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.

He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."

The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.

The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.

Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.

"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."

Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.

I agree with everything you said, but I have not read that anyone might think that maybe his treatments are having a toll on him. His job is 24 hours a day, difficult scheduling, and always on the go. I know alot of people that can’t get 3 things done in one day, and they are exhausted. In fact I know some people that lay in bed for 3 days because they have a cold. I don’t care why he leaves as long as it is a good enough reason for him. I will miss him.

"Seems that salary and benefits would tie him over since he knew coming in what the package was."

What he didn't know was that he would be hit with a reacurrance of cancer. That is very costly.

More power to you Mr. Snow.

Thank you for your service and it's refreshing to hear an honest answer as to why you want to resign.

That was a POS piece of work, wasn’t it?

Yep, and the first big example that the 1994 "revolution" had run off the rails in an orgy of special interest payback.

I wonder if they’d fly in someone from the West Coast, say, Upland?

Nope.

He may have been lying about a lot as press secretary, but he is actually right there with Bush on open borders and amnesty.

For those who think $168,000 is a enough, you’re right. It’s enough to live comfortably, but it’s not a luxurious income in the DC area.

True on all counts. This is why Members of Congress feel strapped as well. They earn in this range and most of them are supporting two homes.

That said, I'd cut their pay to discourage careerism.

I have to say that does not ring true.

You don't live in DC. Greenspam's game of inflating us out of our financial troubles has accelerated the costs of living in DC out of control. Trying to support a family of 3 on that kind of money is stressing enough without all the other pressures (including costs) that arise from working in the WH. Having to have new well tailored freshly pressed suits must cost him a bomb alone.

Not only that, DU is just giddy about Snow’s illness. They think it’s really cool that he is suffering. Just like when Roberts had the seizure.”

I’m going to have to beg to differ just a little on that comment.

I do recall visiting either Kos or DU and saw threads in which a strange kindness had swept over them as the Roberts issue broke.

Unfortunately, they went right back to being their normal selves afterward.

Well I happen to believe the whole ‘financial’ angle to Tony’s leaving the White House, although I can’t help but wonder if in the back of his mind he’s thinking “yep, it’s financial - they can’t PAY me enough to keep defending the indefensible policies coming out of what I thought was a conservative Administration, so I’m OUTTA here!”

Either way, God Bless you Tony and good luck.

I had a two word response to your sensitive post about Tony Snow’s lying to poor little you, but I realized it will get me in the cooler again. It rhymes with “duck stew.”

All the positive things anyone could say for Tony Snow were said... so I’ll just say there were a large number of excellent posts, even if FOX now thinks we are bigots.

This has zero to do with finances.

Tony has hepatic cancer and is nearing the end of his earthly pilgrimage.

He needs our prayers.

I, too, believe Tony Snow. If you’re used to a million, a hundred & a half grand ain’t too good.

However, it is also a signal that “good night, the party’s over. Someone turn out the lights.”

I think everyone realizes that with a Democratic Congress nothing of substance will get done. All the president really needs right now is an ink pen for vetoes.
