Exploring Fred Thompson's Finances
Center for Responsive Politics ^ | August 03, 2007

Posted on 08/13/2007 8:44:35 AM PDT by Calpernia

Southern donors, lawyers, retirees and investors are major backers to the undeclared candidate's exploratory committee, the Center for Responsive Politics finds.

Although Republican Fred Thompson has not officially declared his candidacy for president, he was required to file the financial report for his "testing the waters" efforts by July 31. His "Friends of Fred Thompson" exploratory committee is a 527 committee, which reports to the IRS, not yet a campaign committee that would report to the FEC. Critics have accused Thompson of dodging the disclosure rules that other candidates must abide by, while the former "Law and Order" actor has said he's just making sure there's enough interest in him as a candidate to make a formal bid.

Much of Thompson's money seemed to come from his home state of Tennessee. His supporters thus far include Howard Baker, a former U.S. senator from the state; Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who played for the University of Tennessee in college; and William Haslam, mayor of Knoxville. While Thompson's total haul shown here is nothing to scoff at by previous elections' standards, it wasn't the $5 million his aides hoped for.

Hillary Clinton still hounded by blood-money questions

Now that's sleazy...

Oh, my--surely not "sleazy" posting from a Duncanista! I think that the FReeper you address really meant that (s)he is really glad that you are on top of FDT's donations--you know, keeping an eye on things. You Hunter fans have sharp eyes, you know? After all, all of you knew that Hunter had paid his daughter in-law $105,000 from 2001-2006 from his PAC money, right? That's why none so many of you Duncanistas were criticizing Thompson for doing something that Duncan Hunter also did, right? Yes, we rely on you to keep the Thompson campaign on the straight and narrow.

New York State ranks third in Donors by State, and New York City ranks fourth in Donors by Metro Area.

Now, that’s encouraging.

Holy mackeral, no.

I apologize for the misunderstanding, I should have been more clear and quoted this:

While Thompson's total haul shown here is nothing to scoff at by previous elections' standards, it wasn't the $5 million his aides hoped for.

It's annoying how often even good news is tempered by this kind of thing.

"Contributions will be pouring in once Fred declares"

Agreed, a lot of people are just waiting for him to officially announce. November 2007 would be a good time.

With all the constant media hype about the candidates and all their completely useless straw polls and multiple meaningless debates, Mr Thompson can (sadly) capitalize on the fact that a LOT of American voters are going to be really ticked when the national election doesn't materialize THIS November. I've been doing politics for decades, and personally suspect that voter burn out from a two year long election year is what Democrats are counting on to win. A Fred Thompson candidacy has the potential to counteract burnout and recapture voters' interest.

That sounds more like species than social class.

Guess I’m missing your point? Or did you have one?

Now mackeral is a different class than a crustacean. And it is one fish I’ve still not caught in my life time.

Thank you, Calpernia.

I am sure we all want a presidential candidate who can stand up and defend his own decisions-fiscal and otherwise.
