Southern donors, lawyers, retirees and investors are major backers to the undeclared candidate's exploratory committee, the Center for Responsive Politics finds.
Although Republican Fred Thompson has not officially declared his candidacy for president, he was required to file the financial report for his "testing the waters" efforts by July 31. His "Friends of Fred Thompson" exploratory committee is a 527 committee, which reports to the IRS, not yet a campaign committee that would report to the FEC. Critics have accused Thompson of dodging the disclosure rules that other candidates must abide by, while the former "Law and Order" actor has said he's just making sure there's enough interest in him as a candidate to make a formal bid.
Much of Thompson's money seemed to come from his home state of Tennessee. His supporters thus far include Howard Baker, a former U.S. senator from the state; Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who played for the University of Tennessee in college; and William Haslam, mayor of Knoxville. While Thompson's total haul shown here is nothing to scoff at by previous elections' standards, it wasn't the $5 million his aides hoped for.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning!...........What about REGGIE BUSH??!?!?!?!?..................
Reggie Bush?
Did I misunderstand you? Or did you just call me or my posting sleazy?
Running back, New Orleans Saints........The current NFL ad blitz for the start of the season features Peyton and Reggie checking into the same hotel and then they start playing tricks on each other, like ordering 50 lobsters to the other persons room and then they escalate up to Reggie ordering a cow up to Peyton’s room, under Peyton’s name of course...........Their teams play the first day of the season......
Already people are getting SICK of the premature stumping around. It’ like celebrating Christmas right after Easter. He’ll announce and not need to back track on statements as other candidates will have to do. Things change and many candidates have made specific statements that will NOT make sense at a later time - especially on IRAQ - guess it’s not a “Bush bumper sticker” after all and PROGRESS is being made through the “surge”.

Hey, anyone want to play that trick on me is more than welcome!
“Contributions will be pouring in once Fred declares. All this concern about Freds financial standing is a sleazy attempt to discount his campaign.”
Agree!
I haven’t seen others under such a microscope. They’re grasping at straws to minimize him because he is a THREAT to other GOP contenders.
But YOU would have to pay for them! They order the stuff in each others names!............
I want to see Harry Reid’s finances. now that would be interesting news.
“Hey, anyone want to play that trick on me is more than welcome!”
I bet you wouldn’t say that if they send you the bill.
::puts butter back in freezer::
Successful professionals are going to support Fred!
Currently most are from the South!
Arrgh, he’s DOOMED!
“Hey, anyone want to play that trick on me is more than welcome!’
It wasn’t fifty lobsters, but I stayed in that hotel once and did pick up a case of crabs.
If they were donating to Paul, it would have just been shrimp.
Tells you the different caliber of supporters though don’t it...
And that is something you want announced on a public forum?
What have you got against crabs?
Nothing against blue claws or Alaskan Kings. I would just want to be real clear about the intention of a post like that.
