African-Americans are victims of nearly half the murders committed in the United States despite making up only 13 percent of the population, a report published Thursday showed.
Around 8,000 of nearly 16,500 murder victims in 2005, or 49 percent, were black Americans, according to the report released by the statistics bureau of the Department of Justice.
Broken down by gender, 6,800 black men were murdered in 2005, making up more than half the nearly 13,000 male murder victims.
Black women made up 35 percent, or 1,200, of the nearly 3,500 female homicide victims.
Young black men aged between 17 and 29 bore a disproportionately high burden in the grim statistics, making up 51 percent of African-American murder victims.
The percentage of white male murder victims in the same age group was 37 percent.
More than half the murders of blacks took place in densely populated urban areas.
Firearms were involved 77 percent of the time in homicides involving black people and around 60 percent of the time in murders of whites.
Most murder victims -- 93 percent of blacks and 85 percent of whites -- were killed by someone of their own race.
Gang violence was involved in around five percent of homicides with black victims against seven percent for white victims.
In percentage terms, whites were twice as likely to be killed by a current or former partner than blacks -- 12 percent of whites were murdered by a life partner against six percent of blacks.
Blacks were also at greater risk of rape or sexual assault than any other ethnic group except American Indians, the report showed.

And just what do you propose the President of the United States do to correct this situation?
Officially, “race” is different from “ethnicity”. Ethnicity refers to Hispanic or non-Hispanic. One can be Hispanic and either black, white, asian or other race. Makes statistical categorization a difficult task. In practice, there are very few non-white Hispanics so you can split “white” into “white non-Hispanic” and “white Hispanic”. I have no idea how this affects the crime stats; just chiming in on the official categories.
I don’t know what Bush should do, maybe write an executive order and declare war on the gangs.
So you are upset with the president because he isn’t doing something, although you don’t have the faintest idea what that something should be?
The only people who are going to solve this problem are black people themselves.
And it’s NOT going to be the result of some Federal program either.

Another interesting statistic -- there are more black men in prison than in college.

I have read and seen so many reports in regards to the gangs of L.A.
They control portions of the city. If these gangs are so strong why don’t city officials use state guard to patrol and aid in arrest.
This could be construed as a huge organized crime network worthy of every means necessary to bring it under control.
I just hate that these punks keep areas of the city under constant terror of shootings, robberies, drugs and so forth.

BTW: The overwhelming majority of the Hispanics in Camden are 2nd and 3rd generation Puerto Ricans. Nevertheless, most of the homicide victims and perps are black.
Just as black gangs intimidated whites in Newark, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, the Bronx, and too many cities countless to mention. What goes around, comes around...

Make it a national priority to help the people that are the victims of this misery, instead of burying our heads in the sand.
