Girly men are perfect partners, say women

Women searching for the perfect partner avoid macho men in favour of feminine-looking types whom they see as more committed and better parents, research has found.

Jools Oliver with husband Jamie

Men with masculine features, such as a square jaw, larger nose or smaller eyes were perceived to be less faithful, more detached and worse fathers. Those with fuller lips and wide eyes were seen as being more caring, nurturing and less likely to stray.

Psychologists from Durham and St Andrews Universities asked more than 400 people to look at pictures of male faces that were digitally altered to look more masculine or feminine. They were then asked to predict personality traits, such as sexual behaviour and parenting skills, based on the images.

The results, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, revealed that as well as preferring more feminine faces, participants chose healthier ones - such as those with better complexions - as more representative of positive traits, while older faces were preferred over younger ones.

And they could answer some questions when it comes to celebrity pairings. The jazz singer Michael Buble's round cheeks and eyes may indicate that his girlfriend, the Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt, is looking to settle down. The actress Gwyneth Paltrow's choice of the scruffy Coldplay singer Chris Martin could be explained by his big blue eyes and bee-stung lips.

The chef Jamie Oliver's button nose and baby face may show that his wife, Jools, was spot on when she chose to start a family with him - not only does he seem a model father but he has also taken charge of the eating habits of others' children as well.

One of the authors of the report, Prof David Perrett, from St Andrews University, said a healthy face can override "negative" masculine features to make men more appealing. This would explain why the singer Charlotte Church chose the rugged Welsh rugby player Gavin Henson to father her child.

"Our research also found that it is men's health that conveys all-round good qualities for partnership and personality," he said.

The study, supported by the Medical Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council, backs up research of masculinity and personality perceptions and could help relationship counsellors and psychologists.

The lead author, Dr Lynda Boothroyd, a Durham University psychology lecturer, said: "This research shows a high amount of agreement between women about what they see, personality wise, when asked to 'judge a book by its cover'.

"They may well use that impression of someone to decide whether or not to engage with that person. That decision-making process all depends on what a woman is looking for in a relationship at that time of her life."

This is complete BS for feminist women who want eunachs not men.

This is about a rehab campaign for the Political Correctness emasculation of men to resume since we see time and time again that real men do step up to save the day.

Did anyone else notice the stories of MEN stepping up to rescue those children on the bridge? (apparently the girly men nearby did not do much)

Women tend to be attracted to those who are “good providers.” To be a good provider today takes a certain skill set that has to do with conplex abstract thinking and nothing to do with being a manly-man.

One need only to look at how society rewards jobs that entail physical labor as opposed to specialized skill sets to see where manly-men stand.

Speaking as a woman I think this study is complete bull.

Why is it women are attracted to men in uniform (firefighters, police officers, military, etc.)? Those are all masculine type jobs and the vast majority of the men look masculine.

I don’t find feminine looking men attractive at all. Whenever I have to fight with a man for the mirror, I run. ;o)

I think women like to have metrosexual friends, and masculine husbands.

I predict that many, if not most, of those women who want a "girly-man" as a father for their kids will soon be taking on a "he-man" on the sly to make up for, let's just say "the deficiencies", of their baby-sitting, home-decorating, girly-man husbands.

It's been a long, looong time since I was a single man playing the field, but IIRC an awful lot of the women I encountered during that period of my life were intrigued by men who they perceived as somehow dangerous or risky to be with. Good looks as typified by men like John Edwards or Leonardo Dicaprio were not as attractive to the women I knew back then as were guys typified by actors like Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, or Steve McQueen who may not have been pretty boys, but had cultivated a "tough guy" or "bad boy" image.

That may have all changed nowadays. I wouldn't know myself, since I am happy to be able to say that I have been out of the dating scene for several decades and don't miss it at all.

exactly my thought; what the women want is a stay at home pussy cat, who will look the other way, while they have sex with the construction guy next door....

Honestly, women aren't attracted to such men at all - they just need them for economic stability. Unless the "provider" also knows how to push the "lover" buttons, she'll be spending some long afternoons with the pool boy. ;)

Women can't accurately define what they are attracted to - they tell researchers what they think they ought to want, and that is very different from what they actually respond to.

“Women searching for the perfect partner avoid macho men in favour of feminine-looking types whom they see as more committed and better parents, research has found.”

Hence the problem with today’s younger generation of males - they are mental and social castrati who swollow hook line and sinker political correct garbage.

We were better off when men were men and settled their differences like men instead relying on a corrupt and ineffective judicial system. We were also better off when we defended our national rights with gunboat diplomacy.

Gurlie men are the pox creating today’s counter-culture.

Having lived in environments for extended times that value both the manly-man and the girly-man, I can tell you that neither is what the stereotypes portray.

The so-called girly-men are apt to be better educated, therefore more aware of diet, nutrition etc. and able to afford the time/money it takes for personal trainers or at least gym memberships.

The so-called manly-men in manly men jobs often start falling apart by age 35 via poor diet, dangerous work, etc.

We’ve reached a point where the majority of physical labor jobs are among the worst paying — often going to illegal immigrants. And the jobs with extremely narrow skill sets, such as math calculations/models for entire market sectors in the stock market, are extremely well paying.

Worse, the generalized skill sets that manly-men used to take pride in, such as changing oil in the car, basic carpentry, etc. are no virtually useless or minimum wage jobs.

You're exactly right, there. We're heading toward an economy which will leave us with a lot of unemployable in-betweens.

I distinctly remember guys working on their cars on a Saturday afternoon. Haul out the oil from a case in the garage along with a new filter, put the car up, and slide under. While you’re at it, check the brake fluid and tranny. Guys took pride in all of that. Now you can get it done for less than it costs to take the family out to MickeyD’s. Tough to take pride in something that can be done for so cheaply. And the same is true for alot of those jobs.

I would like to see a study looking at why women are attracted to men like the police officer in Ohio who last month killed his pregnant girlfriend with the help of an old high school girlfriend, had a wife and child at home, a child with the dead girlfriend, and another child by another woman.

IMO, it's a mix of predatory males and ignorant females. I promise that if you started taking interest(albeit superficial and anti social) in many women, you would end up in the bed of many women rather quickly.

It might be just that he's got an athletic body that Charlotte can't resist and she figures he'll pass along his athletic skills to her kid.

I don’t know any women who want girly men .....Who would want to deal with a man that might be prettier then they are? I wouldn’t want to share all my girly hair products with my man.

This isn't really about metrosexuals. Just about genetics. They are one and the same some times, but this was just about people looking at features due to genetics.
