Having lived in environments for extended times that value both the manly-man and the girly-man, I can tell you that neither is what the stereotypes portray.

The so-called girly-men are apt to be better educated, therefore more aware of diet, nutrition etc. and able to afford the time/money it takes for personal trainers or at least gym memberships.

The so-called manly-men in manly men jobs often start falling apart by age 35 via poor diet, dangerous work, etc.

We’ve reached a point where the majority of physical labor jobs are among the worst paying — often going to illegal immigrants. And the jobs with extremely narrow skill sets, such as math calculations/models for entire market sectors in the stock market, are extremely well paying.

Worse, the generalized skill sets that manly-men used to take pride in, such as changing oil in the car, basic carpentry, etc. are no virtually useless or minimum wage jobs.

You're exactly right, there. We're heading toward an economy which will leave us with a lot of unemployable in-betweens.
