When I lived in Brooklyn, I had the Butterfly (don’t ask me to spell it in Cyrillic) night club right across the street from my building. It was shut down within a year after an FBI raid. ;-)
I was born and raised there. Up until about 1960 it was a great place to live. The liberals took over in the sixties and it never recovered. After the ‘67 riot when a decision was made not to protect property, everyone who could, began to leave.
What was left behind is a shell. Many burnt out neighborhoods, abandoned homes, empty lots.
My mother lived in the 8mile/Kelly area until 2000. When she was mugged the POLICE told me to move her out as she could not be protected. THAT IS THE STANDARD ADVICE OF THE DETROIT POLICE DEPARTMENT. I’m not kidding.
Today she lives with me in Grand Rapids, the home of Jerry Ford and the West Michigan Republican Party. A city that actually, mostly, works.

I don’t know what Detroits graduation rate is, but I GUARANTEE YOU THIS! It isn’t remotely near the 67% which was the high number offered in the article.. you have to fudge the numbers big time to remotely come close to a near 70% graduation rate.
Its definately under 50%, no doubt.
When you have a city in such collapse that the people who have fled are now moving their ancestors graves out of the city because they don’t feel safe enough to visit a graveyard in the middle of the day there.. you have a big problem.

Nevertheless there is alot of "up and coming" neighborhoods. Living single in Chicago on a modest income, it is virtually impossible to buy one of those condos in even a sketchy neighborhood. While rent, food and other necessities are relatively reasonable, housing has skyrocketed. I suppose Chicago has become somewhat of the Midwest capital for gays and the double-income no kids crowd.

Amazing how nobody in the MSM has covered any of this, at least that I’m aware of...but for Gingrich we wouldn’t be talking about Detroit.

Though, while New Orleans may be getting to be “untouchable” now (post-Katrina), it has been a similar disaster to her people in the similar vein, probably on the similar scale as Detroit long before Katrina washed out her festive mask.
Why people can’t see who runs (ruins) these cities and these states for decades, is beyond me.

Detroit school board suspects fraud
Officials question $46 million spent on contractors

An independent investigation into irregularities involving at least $46 million in wire transfers from the Detroit Public Schools has led the district to consider seeking criminal charges against current and former contractors and employees.
Detroit Board of Education President Jimmy Womack, speaking on behalf of the board, said Monday that a report generated by the investigation suggests individuals could have embezzled or otherwise skimmed some of the money from those payments, which were made over more than 3 1/2 years.
