One of my four brothers graduated from the University of Iowa, but being an African American male, I don't think I want to spend too much time in the Hawkeye State. Only about 2 percent of Iowa's population is African American, but blacks are 13.6 times more likely than whites to be imprisoned there. That's more than twice the national average, which is bad enough

Yeah, the prisons are sexist too. Over 90 percent of those in prison are male, when in a just society it should be 50-50.

And Asians are woefully under-represented.

Agreed. Joe Arpaio's "tent cities" would be far preferable as far as accomodations are concerned. Add hard labor / chain gangs to that and we've got a winning ticket.

The racists among us, blatant and closeted, will be quick to attribute the imprisonment disparity to the misguided belief that African Americans are inherently prone to criminality

It’s easy for anyone regardless of race or sex to stay out of prison: don’t do the crime and you won’t have to do the time. Everyone in prison today went through due process of the American legal system before they landed in the can. I have no sympathy for this “disparate impact” mumbo-jumbo excuse liberals trot out to explain why more black Americans are in prison.

I see no mention in the article of personal responsibility. Nor of unwed mothers who are almost always certain to live in poverty.
