Sex Ed for Kindergarteners 'Right Thing to Do,' Says Obama
ABC News ^ | July 18, 2007 1:13 PM | Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do."

"I remember Alan Keyes . . . I remember him using this in his campaign against me," Obama said in reference to the conservative firebrand who ran against him for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Sex education for kindergarteners had become an issue in his race against Keyes because of Obama’s work on the issue as chairman of the health committee in the Illinois state Senate.

"'Barack Obama supports teaching sex education to kindergarteners,'" said Obama mimicking Keyes' distinctive style of speech. "Which -- I didn’t know what to tell him (laughter)."

"But it’s the right thing to do," Obama continued, "to provide age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in schools."

Speaking to a young woman who asked a question about sex education, Obama said, "You, as a peer, can have enormous power over your age cohort but you’ve got to have some support from the schools. You certainly should not have to be fighting each and every instance by providing accurate information outside of the classroom because inside the classroom the only thing that can be talked about is abstinence."

"Keep in mind: I honor and respect young people who choose to delay sexual activity," Obama continued. "I’ve got two daughters, and I want them to understand that sex is not something casual. That's something that we definitely want to communicate and should be part of any curriculum. But we also know that when the statistics tell us that nearly half of 15 to 19 year olds are engaging in sexual activity, that for us to leave them in ignorance is potentially consigning them to illness, pregnancy, poverty, and in some cases, death."

When Obama's campaign was asked by ABC News to explain what kind of sex education Obama considers "age appropriate" for kindergarteners, the Obama campaign pointed to an Oct. 6, 2004 story from the Daily Herald in which Obama had "moved to clarify" in his Senate campaign that he "does not support teaching explicit sex education to children in kindergarten. . . The legislation in question was a state Senate measure last year that aimed to update Illinois' sex education standards with 'medically accurate' information . . . 'Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way that we think about it,' Obama said. 'If they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing. Although again, that's going to be determined on a case by case basis by local communities and local school boards.'"

In addition to local schools informing kindergarteners that babies do not come from the stork, the state legislation Obama supported in Illinois, which contained an "opt out" provision for parents, also envisioned teaching kindergarteners about "inappropriate touching," according to Obama's presidential campaign. Despite Obama's support, the legislation was not enacted.

Looks like Keyes left a mark!

(Hey, I'm and Illinois Republican. I've got to take solace where I can.)

I’m thinking Scott Ritter would LOVE to teach Obama’s daughters a whole lot of sex ed.

Baby gherkins

Do they make condoms that small? If so, stand by for demonstrations in kindergarten.

If you think Barack Obama is bringing this up at a Planned Parenthood meeting and the goal is something reasonable, you're very naive. PP is the organization that brought us condom placement diagrams for 6th grade Girl Scouts, pamphlets saying any impulse (including bestiality or screwing your grandma) is just fine, and the organization that got caught coaching 13 year old girls so their abusers would not be arrested.

They are not going to molester-proof these kids, they are going to molester-prep these kids.

don't think you'd be doing your sons any harm whatsoever by telling them where babies come from and how they're made. They can handle the information without becoming 'sexualized'.

Halls isn't doing them any harm by keeping it close to the vest for now, either. I'm not aware of any studies showing kids are screwed up if they don't hear this stuff by X age. I learned that stuff even earlier than wimpycat did, but countless people have been perfectly well adjusted learning it much later, even waiting until the threshhold of puberty.

Jocelyn Elders got a pass from the media. While the Clintons’ claimed it was her comment that kids should be taught how to masturbate that got her “fired”, her comment that health care money should be spent on children instead of the elderly was more offensive.

She said those old people are “just gonna die anyway and besides those kids are going to be the ones paying for my social security”. < /paraphrase >

Obama said. 'If they ask a teacher 'where do babies did people come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not God a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing.

These are not the same thing but set a dangerous precedent.

Should teachers be able to tell kindergartners that there is no Santa Claus either? Can they do this during the 15 minutes of class time reserved for muslim prayer?

exactly. And my point is this. It is my job to teach my kids about sexuality and my decision on when they learn about it, not the govt! If my kids happen to find out about it on their own from other kids there is nothing I can do about that, but I’ll be damned if the govt is going to force my 5 year old son to learn about it without my approval.

“Wonder what Oprah will say about this?”

I have a hard time believing she would support this - but then again she is quite the lib.

I think this is just the opposite of what Romney proposed in his new ad about cleaning up the cultural ocean our children swim in. Talk about a stark contrast! One party trying to empower and strengthen government while the other party supports empowering parents and strengthening the American family.

Alan Keyes was right and Barack Obama was wrong. The people of Illinois have the wrong Senator.

"ABC News' Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do.""

There is no age appropriate way to teach sex ed to kindergarteners. They are innocent children. They should be playing with dolls and trucks, playing games, watching Nickelodean, Disney, and Sesame Street, and believing in Santa Claus. Why let children worry about such things? Just let them be kids!

I learned late. I had an idea before this, but I learned the full details around age 12 when I was headed for puberty. At kindergarten, all I knew is that God made boys to pee standing up and girls to pee sitting down. I was told when a man and woman love each other, God gives them a baby. It grows in the woman's tummy until it comes out. That's about the extent that children of that age should know. If a parent wants to tell them more, fine! That is a parent's choice. Sex ed shouldn't be taught until later on with a strong emphasis on abstinence. Then parents should be able to opt the kids out.

Obama sounds like a typical Marxist liberal. They want kids of all ages exploring their sexuality from as young as they can walk. They want them with multiple partners of both sexes trying all sorts of sex. Just make sure they stop by PP for their free condoms and birth control. If that fails, then PP will rip the baby apart, or let it die when born. Hussein supports live birth abortions. What a sick freak! I would love to see Hunter tear him apart in debates.

What sex education is appropriate for a 4 year old?

Boys get the ‘birds and the bees’ talk around age 13. I never got it from my father, but it doesn’t matter ‘cuz I’m celibate.
