Hummer Owner Gets Angry Message

Vandals Batter D.C. Man's SUV, Slash Its Tires and Scratch In an Eco Note

On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage. So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his "dream car."

It lasted five days on the street before two masked men took a bat to every window, a knife to each 38-inch tire and scratched into the body: "FOR THE ENVIRON."

"The thought of somebody vandalizing it never crossed my mind," said Gareth Groves...

Now, as Groves ponders what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV, he has been the target of a number of people who have driven by the crime scene in his upscale neighborhood and glared at him in smug satisfaction...

Neighbor Lucille Liem, 37, who owns a Prius hybrid, said that a common sentiment in the neighborhood is that large vehicles are impractical and a strain on the Earth -- and Hummers in particular are a symbol of consumer excess... Liem added quickly that she does not condone violence...

Investigators said they are searching for the vandals but don't have many leads. Witnesses saw two men about six feet tall with bandanas or masks over their faces smash up the car about 3:30 a.m. Monday and then run off...

He bought the used 2005 vehicle a month ago from a dentist in Fairfax County..."I'm worried about what I do now," he said. "If I get it fixed, do I put it back in the same spot three weeks from now?"

I really can’t spend more than $12k on a car. So if I’m gonna have a vette, it’s going to be an older one with the late great small block chevy.

Cars seem to be fair game for all sorts of criminal scum. Last year they had about 7 cars that were participating in the classic car show stolen off the infield at Atlanta Motor Speedway during a NASCAR event.

I think they are both pretty nice and wouldn’t mind having one to drive now and then. On the garages, our house has a two car standard size and single SUV sized garage that was part of the addition. My Tundra or my wife’s Sienna won’t fit in the two car garage, but my Corolla likes it just fine.

There are some good ones out there - look at digitalcorvettes.com to get a feel for what you should pay for what vehicles.

i am thinking though that you have not experienced yet the pubesecent STINK of a teen, if your son is only 11. OMG, even a suburban isn't big enough to spread that stink out! my daughters and i talk about buying some of those surgical masks like the nail technicians wear, in order to ride in a vehicle with those horrific smelling boys and their hockey equipment. wait 2 more years and you will be grossed out beyond belief. my son is almost 16 yo now, but the stink starts right around puberty....

Well, I have started demanding that my son wear deodorant already... LOL... and last year I bought Febreze specifically for his shoulder pads... but I have some idea what you mean. I had a brother who played hockey and my mom always insisted that he keep his equipment bag in the garage. (It could make your eyes water...)

Team MOM, bless your heart! i could stress just thinking about that!!

I am a little stressed, and nervous. My first meeting with the coaches and org is tonight, and I have to start working on "The Book", and I'm taking a two-week vacation starting next week... EEK!

Oh, well... it delights my son to no end, and I figure it just might beat being in charge of water. LOL.

Shows you how stupid those enviro nazis are...That Hummer H3 with the inline 5-cylinder engine is more “eco-friendly” than their priuses. The emissions are very low for a vehicle that size and he doesn’t have to worry about the environmental foot print of disposing of a massive lithium battery.

I tell ya, I’ve been putzing on this Beetle for over two years now...when I get it fully restored, there is no way I’m leaving it anywhere unattended. Too much time and money (well, not much money to most people but a lot to me).

I am going to show it in the Tulsa VW Show this coming September, not for any other reason than for fun. (I might get “Most Optimistic” or something. Heh heh.)

I’ve already made plans to camp out with it.

My garage has two stalls and I have to fold the mirrors in to fit safely.

Corvettes aren't cheap and many men can't afford one until middle age. I'd like to buy one, but I've been out of college for only 2 and a half years, and buying even a 10 year old Corvette for a second vehicle would be hard on my money.

My next car will probably be a Mini convertible. I have my heart set on classic British racing green with the camel top. I'm hoping for several more years out of my current ride, so I'll be in my 40s before I get it. Is that a mid-life crisis? But hey, I'm not balding or graying, so it's all good.

Either way, I have my pick-up line all worked out. Drive up in my tiny little car, shrug, and say "I'm undercompensating."

Why thank you!

I really do enjoy talking about cars with Freepers. They’ve helped me repair my daily driver van on more than one occasion. And I enjoy reading their interests...

I used to like leaving BMWs, etc. at the light on winter days in my 4x4 Suburban. They’d spin and spin and spin faster or with “traction control”, they’d still be left behind. Yuck, Yuck. It was funny.

Nickel for the batteries needs to be mined, smelted and mitigated in the waste stream. So yes, the Prius is higher net cost to the environment than a Hummer.

And don't say "fruitcake" unless you want crank calls from Elizabeth Edwards.

So do you get up in the person’s face and do this or do you do it from the safety of your car?
