Hummer Owner Gets Angry Message

Vandals Batter D.C. Man's SUV, Slash Its Tires and Scratch In an Eco Note

On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage. So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his "dream car."

It lasted five days on the street before two masked men took a bat to every window, a knife to each 38-inch tire and scratched into the body: "FOR THE ENVIRON."

"The thought of somebody vandalizing it never crossed my mind," said Gareth Groves...

Now, as Groves ponders what to do with the remains of his $38,000 SUV, he has been the target of a number of people who have driven by the crime scene in his upscale neighborhood and glared at him in smug satisfaction...

Neighbor Lucille Liem, 37, who owns a Prius hybrid, said that a common sentiment in the neighborhood is that large vehicles are impractical and a strain on the Earth -- and Hummers in particular are a symbol of consumer excess... Liem added quickly that she does not condone violence...

Investigators said they are searching for the vandals but don't have many leads. Witnesses saw two men about six feet tall with bandanas or masks over their faces smash up the car about 3:30 a.m. Monday and then run off...

He bought the used 2005 vehicle a month ago from a dentist in Fairfax County..."I'm worried about what I do now," he said. "If I get it fixed, do I put it back in the same spot three weeks from now?"

Lots of large-vehicle drivers either don’t care or don’t realize that when they blow through the standing water we smaller cars are trying to negotiate, they send said water up over our hoods and into the intake, which can mess up an engine.

I hope you make a point of not driving in the rain.

Personally, I think people should be allowed to drive whatever they want so long as they can afford it and its upkeep!

(And park it in their garage, if that's what the HOA regs state!)

I agree 100%

However, I also think people should be allowed to snicker and mutter, "Whatta buncha nidjits!" or "Shoot, that's gay!" if there's any indication that the driver is a Democrat.

In my family, it wasn’t a real truck until it got so scratched Earl Scheib couldn’t help it.

Liberalism: Who cares about facts and actual consequences, when the symbolism is so critical!

Were one of the morons who believes that the Garden State Parkway is a drag racing strip to hit me, I would likely win.

A little over a week ago, while we were all driving home from the beach, a drunk guy (9 am) driving a full sized van crossed the center line of a four land highway and hit the Land Rover two cars in front of my daughter and her family. The Land Rover flipped several times. The driver and one passenger were killed instantly. Two passengers were injured but survived. The drunk guy was treated and released -- to the custody of the police and charged with two counts of murder.

When the law requires that all drunks must drive mini-hybrids, then I might go smaller. As it is, my 9 passenger Suburban suits me fine. We all drive SUV's or trucks, Tahoes, Suburbans, F150's, and son-in-law normally drives a big diesel double axle Ford.

They were in the Tahoe that day - my son-in-law pulled the ten year old out of the Land Rover. He says he's driving the diesel to the beach next time.

No, they don’t, since I’m heading toward 40 and am officially two decades too old for them.

Among other things.

As I said upthread, anyone is welcome to drive anything he wants and can afford.

But I have fun calling poserdom when I see it, and having an SUV when you’re non-sporting and un-utilitarian is poser in the extreme. :)

It’s like driving a pickup, wearing Wranglers and Luccheses, and claiming to be Goth.

Re: "If anyone tried that down here in Texas, they’d wind up eating a lead sandwich."

Being a NY "yankee" that lives here in the great Lone Star State... I'd make use of a little NY "justice" myself... making use of a Louisville Slugger baseball bat. Any/all perps I caught doing such a thing to my auto would get it in both knees... so the next time said perp goes out on a vandalism spree, he'd have to be doing it from a wheelchair.

They're afraid that too many Hummers will weigh the earth down, and we'll start falling towards the sun.

I worked with an actuary who restored and raced Corvettes for a hobby. It was quite interesting.

The whole reason the SUV rose to such prominence was that a pack of elected idiots decided to enact CAFE standards that effectively wiped the station wagon out for about 15 years.

I would suggest getting a handgun, and using it.

i was driving with two of my kids, prior to the 2004 election. we have a bush-cheney bumper sticker on the van and i had this suburban yuppie couple pull up behind me at the mall, honking and doing this thumbs down thing. i could not imagine what their problem was. they got up along side of me and started haranguing me about BUSH, it was UNBELIEVABLE. i was having a political discussion with these two nitwits for several stoplights worth! they had a small child in a carseat in the back of their BMW SUV and were ragging on me for supporting Bush. it was totally unreal! xsteen and xsbrownie were ready to get out of the vehicle and start to RUMBLE!

I like to look at all the new truck models: so I can see what I’ll be buying in 10 or 15 years.
