Senator In Scandal Won't Resign Republican Acknowledged Connection To 'D.C. Madam'
POSTED: 1:38 pm EDT July 16, 2007 UPDATED: 6:16 pm EDT July 16, 2007 NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana U.S. Sen. David Vitter, who last week admitted to a connection with the so-called D.C. Madam, said Monday he will not resign.
Vitter said he was in seclusion because he wanted time alone with his family and for prayer.
"I'm so very, very sorry" to all those let down by the revelations, Vitter said.
"I will work every day to rebuild this trust," he said.
Vitter, who is Catholic, said he confessed about his indescretions a number of years ago.
"I believe I received forgiveness from God. I know I did from Wendy," he said of his wife, Wendy Vitter.
Vitter is a conservative who ran for office on a platform opposing abortion and supporting a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. He replaced former Democratic Rep. Bob Livingston, who resigned after rumors of numerous affairs.
Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt played a role in exposing both men's activities.
"I think Livingstons stepping down makes a very powerful argument that (former President Bill) Clinton should resign as well and move beyond this mess, he said.
Flynt said last week that his magazine was the first to link Vitter to an escort service operated by Deborah Jeane Palfrey. She is accused of running an escort service in Washington, D.C., a charge she denies.
Vitter acknowledged last Monday that his telephone number appeared among others in Palfrey's records.
He made the admission to The Associated Press in a statement. Flynt said Vitter went to the AP only after one of his reporters contacted Vitter to confirm the connection to Palfrey.

Holy over reaction batman, maybe jefferson should resign first
I hope that Vitter didn’t pay those bills out of his campaign account..
He won’t resign because he, along with so many others, continues to see this as merely an *indiscretion* — private matter between him and his wife, none of our beeswax. Why is it that this fallacy is allowed to take hold when the situation is not about indiscretion but about a lawmaker, by his own admission, violating the law?
Barney Frank was running a gay whorehouse out of his basement and he didn’t resign.
Meanwhile, Dianne Feinstein continues her job in the U.S. Senate with no media scandal surrounding her.
She’s a Democrat, you see...
Like THAT will ever happen!
Sorry for the screaming but..... WHY WOULD ANYONE..ESPECIALLY WITH MONEY GET A HOOKER. DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this Defenant really thinking this out? Doesn’t each person who comes out in repentance, admitting what they’ve done, put another nail in her “there was no sex allowed” defense. All she needs is a couple more Vitter’s to come out asking for forgiveness for visiting her whorehouse.
It doesn’t make sense does it? I’m not for giving any of them a pass but I keep thinking of The Firm. Anyway, this is between God, him, and his family.
It’s good to see Vitter stand up to this. Let’s hope he really means it — and that his wife really is willing to let him stay in the Senate and not denounce him, whether they stay together or not.
In addition to keeping a Republican and a solid conservative in the Senate, it’s important for one of our people to finally STAND UP to the evil Larry Flynt. If no one does, there is no limit to the damage Flynt can do.
"Oooooooh, Mr. Republican Senator, you're SO powerful. Say that veto word again. It turns me on...."
Cheaper than a mistress. Less likely to cause problems too.
Who would get a hooker? A horny guy who wants action then and there. I won’t say it could happen to any of us, but it could happen to more people than we imagine. In addition, I think there’s just a different standard in N’Awlins. It’s never been a family-values place, and I bet some of the hookers in the French Quarter are top of the line in terms of looks. Bottom line, even good men are vulnerable to this.
Definitely. Stupid, but definitely easier in a sense.
God, I’d love to hear a Republican “leader” talk this way for once! Mega-dittoes!!!
