Border Patrol Agent Nearly Assaulted

A suspected immigrant smuggler on Wednesday tried to run down a U.S. Border Patrol agent from Yuma.

At 5 p.m., a Border Patrol video surveillance camera operator witnessed a large group of suspected illegal immigrants cross the Salinity Canal near County 9th Street. Agents spotted the vehicle as it approached the intersection of County 9th Street and Somerton Avenue, the release said.

An agent attempted to stop the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, but the driver ignored the agent's request and continued driving east before turning around and heading back toward the levee and the Colorado River. The agent then tried to deploy a tire spike strip to stop the Suburban.

As the vehicle approached the agent, the driver accelerated and steered toward the agent in an attempt to hit him. The agent moved out of the way and avoided injury, according to the release.

The vehicle turned around and headed east toward Yuma. As it approached Yuma city limits, the agent lost sight of the vehicle and contacted the Yuma Police Department with its description and last known location, the release said.

California Highway Patrol contacted Border Patrol agents at 5:40 p.m. to report that a vehicle matching the description of the suspected smuggling vehicle had been located. After the driver failed to yield to CHP officers, while traveling on Interstate 8 at a high rate of speed, the vehicle became disabled. The Sun was unable to reach CHP to determine how the SUV was disabled.

Two occupants tried to flee but were found and apprehended. A search of the vehicle revealed 16 additional people inside, according to the release.

All 18 occupants were taken into custody and were determined to be Mexican nationals illegally in the U.S. The agent that was nearly hit by the vehicle responded to the scene and positively identified the 17-year-old driver, the release said.

CHP officers found the vehicle was reported stolen from Mexicali in an armed carjacking and was also being investigated by Mexican authorities, the release said.

The FBI was contacted about the assault. The driver faces charges of reckless driving and possession of a stolen vehicle, as well as prosecution by the U.S. Attorney's Office for assault on a federal agent, illegal entry and human trafficking. The Mexican Consulate was notified and will be involved in the process, according to the release.

So a successful apprehension of criminals by law enforcement means sarcasm from you?

They're just here to do the jobs American citizens won't do.

Eighteen in a car, with a 17 year old illegal driving it.

I’m surprised they said they were Mexican in the article.

New Chebby Suburban. Business must be good.
Let’s hope the agent is sternly disciplined for his negligence. He could have dented the bumper with his body.

Why did the headline writer say “nearly?”

nearly assaulted? that's a weird statement. is that like when two planes come really close to eachother and they call it a "near miss"?

this just in: police work is dangerous.

Border Patrol Agent Nearly Assaulted

Nearly???? Attempting to run over a border agent is an assault, isn't it? Nearly Murdered, would have been accurate.

According to Asst. US Attorney Debra Kanof, BPA’s are not supposed to chase or apprehend “fleeing” suspects.

Border Patrol Agent Nearly Assaulted

I guess there is no law against "Nearly" Assaulting someone!

Judge: Did he hit you?

Defendant: He swung at me with a bat but I ducked.

Judge: So he took a swing at you with a bat and missed. What did you do after he missed?

Defendant: I kicked him in the b*lls!

Judge: So you actually caused the accused to suffer pain?

Defendant: Yes, he tried to hit me!

Judge: Ok. So you were "Nearly Assaulted" by the accused and in retaliation you "Assaulted" the Accused?

Defendant: Yes. Well, he was trying to hit me. He had a bat!

Judge: Charges dismissed! Bailiff arrest the defendant for assault against the accused!

“nearly assaulted”?

If somebody tries to run you down, you’ve been “assaulted”.
If somebody hits you, you’ve been “battered”.

“Journalists” can’t get subject-verb agreement right or even spell. You want them to understand complex legal theories like that?

You’d have a better chance of teaching your dog to be able to derive Schrodinger’s First Wave Equation.

LIFE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

A California highway patrolman pulled a car over and told the driver that because he had been wearing his seat belt, he had just won $5,000 in the statewide safety competition.

“What are you going to do with the money?” asked the policeman. “Well, I guess I’m going to get a driver’s licenes..

“Oh, don’t listen to him,” yelled a woman in the passenger seat. “He’s a smart-aleck when he’s drunk.” This woke up the guy in the back seat who took one look at the cop and moaned,” I knew we wouldn’t get far in a stolen car.”

At that moment, there was a knock from the trunk and a voice said, in Spanish, “Are we over the border yet?”.

Tomorrow's headline? "Mexican Consulate complains of harassment. DOJ asks Mexican travelers to testify.

Border Patrol agent could get 11 to 12 years in prison, says DOJ lawyer."
