Almost 1 in 6 Americans Blow Off the IRS and Don't Pay Taxes
Associated Content ^ | 7/5/07 | John Bambenek

According to an IRS spokesperson in an article about anti-war tax resistance, 16.3% of Americans are in non-compliance with their taxes according to the Associated Press. That isn't fudging the numbers or coming up with creative tax deductions; it's simply evading taxes outright. While the story about the anti-war movement calling on people to not pay taxes to protest the war is interesting, the fact that a growing number of Americans are simply evading taxes is startling.

According to IRS estimates, that means there is $345 billion in uncollected taxes per year or roughly 2.6% of the national GDP. As a result of collection efforts, the IRS has generated over $48 billion of that amount in 2006 (or about 15%) according to CNN. These estimates do not include corporations using tax shelters (which "legally" protect them from taxes) or the rich using similar tactics. In 2006, the IRS audited about 1.3 million tax returns out of 130 million filed or an audit rate of about 1% according to an IRS source quoted by CNN. With over 16% overtly flouting the IRS, at best only 1% of those will even be challenged.

The income tax is the main way the federal government keeps you enslaved. It should be abolished.

Are they going to round up these millions of people? It would be interesting to see how they round up people who are not in compliance with tax and ponder why the same techniques couldn’t be used on illegal aliens.

Whatever. The American sheeple get the government masters they deserve.

Perhaps if they simplified the tax code.

If our politicians can pick and choose which laws they are going to abide by and which ones they will ignore, why can’t citizens do the same thing?

Because they control the law enforcement, judges and jails But most importantly they have a monopoly on the initiation of force and coercion.

This fraud is perpetuated by people voting for the lesser of evils. Each person thinks their candidate is always the lesser of evils. Sucked into the ends justify the means, people continue playing by their rules.

Politics is not the solution. Politics is the problem.

Stop playing by their rules.

Want term limits? Vote every incumbent out of office. If their voting record is worthy they can be voted back into office at the next election. If they have a poor voting record then they won't get back in. How many honor their oath to defend and protect the United States Constitution? It may not seem fair to them that they get booted out on the clean sweep. Remember though, they couldn't clean their own houses so the American people will.

I think a sizeable portion of the typical non-voters would step up and help vote all of them out of office. They could see their vote making a difference.

I want the Fair Tax! I’m self employed and I’m paying not only an incredibly high rate, but huge penalties for years when my income fluctuated and I couldn’t pay the full amount of my taxes at that time. I’ll never catch up, essentially. Not a pleasant prospect.

This fraud is perpetuated by people voting for the lesser of evils.

But he's _electable_!!

Seriously, the lesser of two evils is still evil. But, how many Americans really give a damn? I think the vast majority of them are happy to be house slaves for master government.

How do you figure “1/50th” of the taxes owed ?

I think the IRS statement is only in regards to personal income taxes. So a $346B tax gap compared to the roughly $1T personal income taxes actually paid, is big factor. More like 1/4th of the personal income taxes the IRS expects.

So 1/6th of the poeple evading results in 1/4th of the tax revenues as a shortfall. So it is above-average incomes, not lower incomes, that are evading.

So, using a Flat Tax or Fair Tax would actually force these “protestors” to stay legit.

The same way gun laws force crooks to stay legit?

Abolish the Income Tax and its complexities and just have a consumption (sales) tax. The more you use/buy, the more you pay. No tax shelters, deductions, or mountains of paperwork that you have to save forever. No government records on where you put your money. You pay as you go.

Well Congress, since you were willing to allow illegals to get off scot free for back taxes (we all know that), why not give 'amnesty' to real Americans who owe taxes?

Of course, some sort of flat tax would take care of most of these problems, as long as they repeal the 16th amendment.

Warren Buffet and Bill Gates wouldn’t like THAT - they couldn’t trade funds and write it off of their income taxes....

Those taxes make sure politicians and the employees of the state can have great health care while the invaders from the south help destroy medical care.

You would think they would do a better job of making sure Americas hospitals remain profitable.
Thats what happens when you give something away rather then make people earn it.

I’ve been audited once about 20 years ago.

When it was over, they cut me a check for $175, hardly enough to pay for the AlcaSeltzer.

Irwin Schiff's great giveaway

You know... following income tax advice from someone convicted and doing time for income tax evasion is probably not a good idea.
