British Girl Kidnapped in Nigeria (3 year old)

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (AP) - Gunmen smashed in the windows of a car carrying a British girl to school Thursday and kidnapped the three-year-old in the first seizure of a foreign child in Nigeria's increasingly lawless oil region.

The British government called for the immediate release of Margaret Hill, who was taken from her car as it idled in Port Harcourt's heavy morning traffic. Nigerian community leaders were outraged.

``Taking an innocent child by force is a criminal act that should be roundly condemned by Nigerians,'' said Anabs Saraigbe, an influential chief of the ethnic Ijaw people who predominate in the region.

Over 200 foreigners have been kidnapped since militants stepped up their activities against the oil industry in late 2005 and more than 100 expatriates have been seized this year alone as criminal gangs took up the practice.

Why was that child even in Nigeria?

WSJ had a fascinating article on this stuff not long ago. There’s good money to be made in some dangerous parts of the world. Companies do what they can to protect workers and families but these sorts of assignments carry serious risks.

It's not something I would do. But for folks who work in mining or resource recovery, it's not unusual to relocate to wherever.

It’s Africa folks....
Mustn’t be critical of the animals living there — or you’re subject to charges of racism...

I wonder if the press will deal with this horrific behavior as long as it did the horror of putting panties over the heads of illegal combatants at GITMO?

Of course they won’t..
That’s why the MSM should be ignored in EVERY matter..

Like you said, it’s not something I would do. Especially if I had a family.

Why is it that oil tends to coincide with the presence of the worlds worst thugs and cretins?

My Uncle was recruited to run a mine in one of the 'stans. He was provided a very luxurious place to stay. He was could tell his things were gone through every day. Shortly after relations with the 'stan went down hill, he decided not to go over there any more.

If I were working in Nigeria, I think I would probably leave the family at home.

Back in the day, there was a system for being safe in Nigeria. You hired the biggest meanest thug you could to protect you, and paid him very well. The problem was, as the day of your departure approached, the thug would figure out that he would get more money by mugging or ransoming you immediately than he would by working for you until you leave.

So the trick was you would not tell anybody when you were about to leave. You just went about your normal business, and then suddenly dropped everything and ran to the airport just in time to catch your flight out, without so much as a carry-on bag. Your friends would soon realize you were gone, and pack up your stuff and send it after you.

You would be sitting around the club, waiting for the guy you have had a regular tennis game with every week for the past three years, and he just wouldn’t show up. After about a half hour, you figured he made the run for the airport, and you would swing around his place and start packing.

``Taking an innocent child by force is a criminal act that should be roundly condemned by Nigerians,'' said

Taking your children to an unstable country anywhere, where lawlessness and murder is a constant is itself a criminal act.

What are some people thinking?

See ya when you get back from suspension.
Factual or not, that's "continued racism", if you've posted any other similar comments in 2007.

Just saying.

Finding the body sooner does it for you?
If I had to go there due to greed, misguided altruism, delusional visions or for any other reason, I would make sure that my family was relatively safe. At home.

Just saying.
