Ohio Newspaper Under Fire for Outing Gun Owners

CNSNews.com) - An Ohio newspaper's decision to publish the non-public records of concealed carry permit holders drew a strong response, and one gun rights advocacy group published personal but public information about the newspaper's editor.

The Sandusky Register on June 24 published the names, ages and home counties of the almost 2,700 concealed carry permit holders in its circulation area. Ohio gun laws restrict public access to concealed carry records but allow the media to access them.

The printing of the names sparked outrage from gun rights groups, including the Ohioans for Concealed Carry and the National Rifle Association. Critics argue that publishing names and identifying information about concealed carry permit holders puts them at risk being targeted for violence or identity theft.

"Now, someone who has a grudge has a list of targets/victims, and the only reason they have a list of targets/victims is because of the newspaper's unilateral action," the Buckeye Firearms Association said on its website.

“Critics argue that publishing names and identifying information about concealed carry permit holders puts them at risk being targeted for violence or identity theft.”

I don’t see how that follows, but it might prompt someone to try to burglarize them in order to get the gun. But I suspect that the real reason these newspapers publish this info is also the real reason gun owners don’t want it published. There is an implication that anyone who owns a gun ought to be subjected to ridicule.

“Ohio gun laws restrict public access to concealed carry records but allow the media to access them.”

I have never heard this before. What other kinds of records are available to the media but not the public?

Over and over and over again on Free Republic, people describe evil as stupid. These people are not stupid; they are on a mission to destroy gun ownership by using any available means to discourage it, and that is more important to them than selling papers.

The crooks appreciate this, though. They know which houses to break into where they will be less likely to get shot.

And this is why I don’t like CCW. You shouldn’t need a permit to carry a gun. At least not in this country.

For old-times sake, the one who published the concealed permit owners in the Roanoke Times:

CHRISTIAN J TREJBAL

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA 24073

Unless he moved recently. TredgeBall was and is a sneaky weasel.

he needs to hear from the federal gubmint. This is illegal and subject to civil cases times 100’s

It isn't the first time this has happened. I've seen nothing to indicate that it is illegal, and it's very difficult to show direct harm for a civil case, and civil cases against the media are very difficult.

We need to get the law that allows the media access to this information changed, and we need to make sure that the newspapers that do this suffer in the form of reduced subscriptions and advertising revenue.

If it really is possible to sue these newspapers, I'd be interesting in hearing about it considering that I live in Ohio, have a CHL, and I believe that my name was published in one such list in a newspaper, thought it wasn't a local newspaper so I never actually saw the list.

Nor do I recall the part which requires We, the People, to get any form of gov’t permission to exercise a Constitutionally- Guaranteed (not “granted”) RIGHT... Yet too many here cheer on gov’t when they pass so-called “carry laws” which are, in and of themselves, unlawful infringements on RKBA. The publication of this information by the PRIVATE gun-grabbers is no more than the logical extension of the PUBLIC gun-grabbers’ unConstitutional actions.

A couple of weeks ago in Michigan the Lansing State Journal posted names and wages of STATE employees. On its surface you may think this is a good idea but it is the same thing. What purpose did it serve but to expose the people to ridicule. Classification and pay could be posted but I totally disagree with a person’s name. I believe the Lansing State Journal and Detroit FreePress are owned by Gannett.

My name shows up on the web due to work and hobbies, but I don’t see it connected to a list of CHL holders. If I remember correctly the newspaper did not put the list in their on-line version. However if my name were published in the print version I guess I’m a little surprised the list didn’t find its way on-line.

Maybe the county I got my CHL in was not among those from which were published after all.

As I recall they outed several women who had restraining orders on their husbands.

They had moved from their homes and gone into hiding.

They outed their new addresses.

What is the harm in publishing lists of concealed handgun license holders?

Beyond the fact that the Register has now made public that which statutorily was not to be public, what harm can come from this? Buckeye Firearms Association previously brought you the story of a prison guard who was tracked down by a former inmate by using a concealed carry license list published in the local paper. However, beyond this explicit example, the general public remains largely unaware of just how much harm can come from this.

So, as a service to our readers, we have prepared an example by using Sandusky Register Editor Matt H. Westerhold. We have selected him simply because the paper has pointed to him as the one “responsible” for the decision to publish the lists. However, it would have been just as easy, and valid, to do it with Register publisher Doug Phares or Register owner David Rau...
